Would this be suicide?
Would this be suicide?
I really want to get a z28, but I am going to Michigan Tech in the fall. For all of you that don't know Michigan Tech is in the U.P. by Lake Superior. I want to know would it be like suicide to get a z28? I know there would be quite a few times that I wouldn't be able to drive the car because of the snow. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
UP weather: Winter, Almost Winter, Spring, Nearly Winter, right?
Folks have driven rear drive cars and trucks forever in snow. Get a full set of snow tires mounted on 15 or 16's and swap when the snow starts (late August?). You'll be amazed how well it goes.
We drive an Impala SS on four snows with not too many problems.
Make sure you have posi, and a wildly modified engine might not be a good idea.
Go for it!

i dont' think it'd be any differant than driving a truck. they are light in the rear, rear wheel drive and trun tail in snow on a dime. i would just suggest practicing how to drive it in the bad conditions.
that and get some good all season tires, stick with standard 245 series tires otherwise the wider ones will be horrible in the snow.

I just took in on trade at work (I sell for an Olds/Pontiac dealer) my exact Z, only as a non-Anniversary '97 with 35k, and I've been thinking...I can get this car for $10k, maybe make it a daily driver???
I think the best option for any of us in the rust belt is to get a second set of rims (SLP Firebird take offs for $200!!), and get 4 good snows, and stud the back two. Kinda noisy, but at least on my old 2.8 Camaro, it was awesome in snow!! I wouldn't expect this Z to be as good, but my skills in the snow are a lot better than when I had the old Camaro, too...
I say go for it, with snows

I"m driving my SS in the snow, 17' wheels and all, but wiht 235 winter tires, and 4 sand bags in the back. and I like the RWD better then my FWD 01 grand am gt with snows, if the SS slides its predictable, and easy to fix once you get the hang of how to use the throtle to your advantage.
i used to throw slicks on and go play in the rain
I moved to michigan and was very confident about driving in the snow.
then THIS happened. Just cruising in the snow, rear shot out, car was headed for a semi. I had to take it into the wall
it sucked.
i also had 255/50 rears, a 383 amd weight reduction. make sure you dont drive with traction controll on. it locked my gas pedal and there was nothing i could do but brace myself.

It would be very rough up there. They get alot of snow every year. Their would be many days that would be a hassle to drive in. I know the Camaro can be driven in the snow, but how many days of the year are you willing to struggle against snow. Just something to think about...

Put narrower winter tires on it
Yeah, I know they really look like crap during the winter, but it isn't a beauty contest when it comes to safety. I personnally run 205's on my 67 (yeah, different cars) and manage to get around just fine, and have had to plow through a foot of snow once or twice. The narrower snow tire will cut through the snow better to get down to the pavement. Also, less float in slush.

If I stay here (Massachussettes) another winter I'm probably just going to buy a little 4 banger winter beater to keep my Z from rusting and possibly getting into an accident during the winter. It is driveable but kind of a hassle and what if you go to work and its fine out but when you go to leave you end up having 5 inches or more of snow. Not going to be too fun to try and drive home. I just dont want to risk anything happening to my Z like what happened to Trey. Just my $.02
