Question Would 10w 40 Penzoil or Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Oil Hurt my Car?

Hi Guys!

I had a 1997 Camaro Z28 and the valves seemed noisy especially when it warmed up. When it was cold it seemed fine. Oil Pressure was 30psi on it warm.

Now I have a 1997 Formula with 20K miles it hold about 25psi warm. Both cars have noisy lifters except when cold.

I wonder if this is normal for these cars? WOuld it hurt to use 10w 40 a little heavier oil?

Need input guys.......These newer chevy engines in the truck are quiet.

Thanks Lee!

Thumbs up

Mobil 1 0w-40 is suppose to be very good for LT1 engines according to what others say on this board. LT1s like slightly thicker oil.

I use Mobil 10w-40 in mine, and I'm very happy with it, although I don't use Fully Synthetic since I have enough small oil leaks as it is, I don't need anymore.

I am a fan of Mobile 10w-40, sometimes thicker during the summers here in SC.

10W 40 here in the summer, works great and I don't hear a tick from my valvetrain.

Won't hurt it.

I like Mobil 1 in the daily drivers but I've noticed the viscosity on Mobil 1 isn't very stable, it varies more with temp than other oils. Racing my car with Mobil 1 led to more valvetrain noise and lower pressure, I don't recall the temps off the top of my head.

The expensive "snake oil" of RedLine seems to work good on my LT1. I haven't done any oil analysis though.

Check out BITOG for an interesting forum dedicated to lubricants.... though there's plenty of salesmen there

I'm a big fan of 0W-40 oil in street cars. Lots of miles or not.

the only downside to mobil 1 i seem to notice is that it seems to "find" oil leaks and make them worse

Noisy lifters or noisy rockers? Been my experience with the valvetrain in my car that whether it was stock, modified stock or built, there was/is always a little valve train noise. And yes, Mobil 1 is very effective at finding ways out of your engine and onto the driveway.

I'll second that! My BMW has had Castrol fully synthetic since day and mile one. Switched to Mobil 1, that's what I use in my Z, now they both leak oil.

I use mobil 1 10w-30 fully synthetic in my car and i have for the last 6 years with no problems and no leaks.when i park it for winter i put 10w-30 regular Quaker state oil and run it for a few hundred miles after i first get it out and then switch back to mobil 1 and still no problems with leaks.
