Windshield wiper broke. What actually broke?

This morning when i turned on my wipers the drivers side was frozen down and i didn't know it, so the drivers side stated down but the passenger side came up. So after i unstuck the driver side when i turn on the wipers only the passenger side goes up and down. So the ? is what did i probably break? Also is there any place on the net that would show me how to get down into the wiper area so i can look around?
Thanks Mike Allen

unless each arm has a wiper motor i don't believe it could be that because the passenger side works fine. If it is anything like my mach i assume there is a steel arm going to the wiper and it has a clip on it so either the clip broke or the arm but it maybe total different than the Mach.

My girlfriends Camaro did the same thing last year. All that happened on hers was the nut that holds the arm down to the splined shaft came loose. It wore some of the splines down a little bit but I was able to put it back on and tighten it. Still works a year later.

Either one of the 'ball and socket' joints popped off, or[more likely] the tapered splined wiper shaft[ that the wiper arm goes on] stripped...
With luck removing, cleaning, and retightening that will work[the arm is 'die cast[soft] and the shaft is harder steel, so the splines in the shaft will be intact, and you'll be 'cutting' new ones when you reinstall it..

That was the problem the splines on the wiper arm were stripped. I just took the arm off cleaned and retightened it. Its good as new but naturally as i was taking one of the plastic covers off in the cold it broke oh well at least i have wipers. Thanks guys.

May sound like a stupid question, but the same thing happened to me - how do I access the arm and remove the plastic covers to get to that nut? I need detail, or else I'll seriously screw up my car...

The plastic covers pop off.

I think they are about $8 each from the dealer when you break them.
