will a mid 80's 700r4 fit in a 94 formula

My friend has a 94 formula and the tranny is going out. I have a 700r4 from a mid 80's firebird v6. Are the trannys the same? Were the v6 trannys built a little different, or is it as strong? Also, will the same drive shaft work, or will it need to be chopped/lengthened? When I got the trans, the guy said it wouldnt shift out of first, but thought maybe it was linkage because it quit all of the sudden, and wasnt a progressive thing? Could this be true? Im just trying to help a good friend save a few bucks cuz he's in collage full time and could use it. Josh.

I'm assuminmg that the tranny was out of a 2.8 car and no they will not work. You can incorperate one from a V8 car. The bellhousing is different on the 2.8's.

Can I swap the bellhousings? Or is that even possible on an auto. Im more of a 6spd man, so I wouldnt know. I also have a TH 200 that has been behind several small blocks. Would it bolt in and get him by till he can get a rebuild?
