Question Will I need a PCM tune?

Hey all, hows it goin? I'm doing an engine swap on my 95 Z28. The engine I'm putting in is out of another 95 Z28 but in alot better shape. While the new engine is out I will be putting in a 510/520, 281/287, 230/236 dur @ 50deg cam, electric water pump, 1.5 rr's, and 30# injectors on top of my current mods; Hooker LT's, K&N CAI, Granatelli MAF, 52mm TB, 160 thermo, ORY, and free mods. I was wondering if my car will run correctly if at all without a PCM tune? I have a MAF Super Translater box that I may be able to tune some stuff with, but i'm not sure. Also 95's are supposed to have OBDI computers, correct? Well how come in my 95 and the one im getting the engine out of take an OBDII plug and OBDII program? I talked to a guy not to long ago and he said some 95's were half OBDI and half OBDII. What's up with this?

Thanks in advance for help!

Re: Will I need a PCM tune?

I am not sure on camaros but the cars that switched body styles in 94-95 came with OBDI or OBD 1.5 it was a phase in period. I have never heard of a camaro with OBD1.5 or the hybrid model.

ALLL 95s have an OBD1 computer with an OBD2 plug. Just need a cable specific to your year. A tune is a mUST with almost any mod. It is all but required with a cam and if you swap injectors you will just waste fuel.

Tune it or don't do it.

Well I am planning on tuning it soon but after I do these mods I might need my car for a little bit untill i have time to send the computer off to get it tuned. So I'm wondering if it will even run...

Re: Will I need a PCM tune?

The cam you are installing is too big to run well without a tune. The added fact that you are switching injectors is an even bigger problem. If you keep the stock injectors in you MAY be able to get it fairly drivable with the MAF translator.

A better solution would be a mailorder tune with a PCM swap where you send back your PCM once you have it out.

Madz28.com or PCMForless.com ? I'm leaning towards madz28 for some reason. How long will it take to get it back if I send it in? Do I just tell him what I have in my car and he tunes it accordingly?

Re: Will I need a PCM tune?

there is an order form on madz28.com where you can specify what you need, fill it out, print it out, send it with the pcm and M-O and you will be golden

http://www.madz28.com/order.php
No need to print out and send, just hit submit.
I usually mail out sent in PCMs the next day after I receive it. Takes 2-3 business days for it to get to you with rare exceptions. (like national holidays or post office screw-ups)

I've never used madz28, but know people who have... but from personal experience Bryan at pcmforless did a kickass job w/ my cam tune.

not to mention you will need a torque converter upgrade for sure with that cam i'm talking from past experience.

good luck, youll like the sound of that cam not too rough and not too quit people will definetly notice you have something under that hood

Do you have a sound clip of your car with this cam? I would love to hear it!
