Question Will I be able to beat my friend's Cobra??

I have a 97 RS convertible. I already have a 95z28 donor car lined up for the swap next month. I already have a borla catback, been running open, probably still will, sfc's, aluminum DS. I have jet hot lt's at home already, and awaiting on my mufflx y pipe. I'll be adding a k&n cai, 160 thermo. I want to get a high stall tc, but don't really know where to get one, and from what I read I can't really go over 2800 due to the year of the motor/trans? I don't know what gears are in the rear end of the 95 yet. The only mod he has is an aftermarket catback, not even sure of the make, not a popular one. His is a convertible as well, but a standard. What else can I do to take him, exspecially while the engine and trans are out? I'm tired of him making fun of my v6 car, so this is my main goal to kick his azz.

Oh, his Cobra is a 96, so it's not the newer body one.

if you are sure it is a 96 cobra then those came with 305hp and 300lbs torque stock out of a "new" 4.6L V8. The LT1 makes 275hp. Borla is a very high flowing muffler compared to his "lesser known" unless its something crazy.

Those aluminum drive shafts are supposed to bring the drivetrain loss from 16-20% to more like 5% so thats a big hit for his Mustang losing at least 15% drivetrain which would be something like 260rwhp after his drivetrain loss.

If you are using the stock RS tires you are going to need an upgrade because those probably suck. His Cobra will have some very thich stock tires, probably looking at 9.5" thick.

Verdict: He'll have more stick at the beginning with his tires but it sounds like it should be a close race. I'd choose yours over his simply because your engine is bigger and the exhaust is higher flowing and that driveshaft should keep you flying. It will be very close.

Piece of cake. You'll take him easily. Unless he is a phenominal driver...even then it would be close. I bought my 97Z a month after my friend bought his 97 Slobra. We went to the track couple months later and I smoked him on all 5 runs. Not even close. The closest he got was like 2/10s.

JK,

Are you having any problems with the 3000 stall in the 700r4?

Did you have to retune anything or?

1) "How does an aluminum DS drop 15%?"

2) "Stock 96 cobra wheels are 245/45/17, RS are 235/50/16. 10mm smaller than the cobra's, with thicker sidewalls."

3) "The Cobra has true duals, unless he's running a 4"loudmouth, the cobra has better exhaust flow. Bigger engine doesn't mean you'll win."

Stock for stock, LT1 cars have the edge on the 96-98 Cobras. Depending on his mods and on yours, it will determine the race. Dont know his mods but with the ones your planning, especially the stall, you should put him away with ease.

well it makes sense to me, ive never heard of this, but think about it hold a metal pole about 8-10 feet long say steel or something and hold it out in front of u, assuming ur abs and shoulders can lift it, now try to spin it, then take a aluminum one, probably 30-60% the weight of the steel pole u are holding and try spinning that one...

meaning there is less horse power & torque spent on turning that and it will make ur car lighter.

similar to having aluminum wheels instead of steel wheels just makes for easier spining less resistance.

how much do alluminum drive shafts anyway?

Stock driveshafts are not really that heavy, I wouldn't think there would be 5lbs. difference between the two but thats a guesstiment. I beat a 96-98 Cobra with no more mods than what I have.

anyways i used words like "probably" because i didnt know what kind of tires the Cobra had. I knew for a fact though that the RS tires were thinner than say SS tires, and i thought maybe the Ford tires would be the same size.

I made a generalization about engine size. Obviously a 502ramjet will 99% of the time beat a 4-cylinder, but there is always that 1%.

The aluminum driveshaft just puts less effort on the engine to spin the shaft because its lighter. Once again, an estimation on the drivetrain loss, didnt present any facts or claim to be a rocket scientist.

Thanks for making me look stupid...

Talking

I Have raced 2 cobras and both were stick. I dont know much about Rustangs so I am not really sure if all cobras come stick or not but both cobras had the horizontal lights on the back and i saw these while i was pulling up next to it. The first cobra i raced i had only FIPK2 and 80 series FLowmaster and i took him out about 1 1/2 cars. The second cobra i raced i had an extra mod which was the B & M shift kit. On 2nd gear i pulled 1/2 a car when it shifted alone and i beat that sucker by about 2 1/2 cars i believe...hard to see cuz it was about 4:30 am while going to work and let me tell you...that cold shower did not wake me up as much as that race did. Overall, I am pretty sure you will smoke the cobra without a problem.........
