will crossed plug wires throw codes?
It would run like absolute crap. Backfiring and an extreme loss of power. You'd be running on 6 cylinders, as two would be firing at sometime other than when they should be. You'd also run extremely rich. It should be pretty easy to notice that something isn't correct.
I can feel a misfire if it happens a couple times in a row.
Now a dead cylinder, I think you would have to be dead not to feel and hear that.
OBD1 has its disadvantages but I have to say I am real happy with my OBD1 system it will let you know if something bad is goin down while not being near as intrusive as OBD2.
By that I mean it won,t freak out as easy when I put mods on but it will still help me figure out what it is thats malfunctioning.
As for the crossed wires its pretty easy to make sure your firing order is correct.
