Will 6500 RPM limiter be safe on a stock engine?

I'm jsut writing out everything for my PCM reprogram, and would like a higher limiter.

was thinking that 6500 would still be safe, or should I just go 6200 or 6300?

headers will be the only mod.
the rest stock, and I know the power falls at that high, but it will make it so that I dont have to go into 4th in the 1/4

Seems a little high. Even with LT4 heads and hotcam I have the limit set at 6200. If you're not gonna get more power at that RPM, why use it? Just putting more stress on the engine.

Why would you set the rev limit to 6500 on a stock engine? There is a very good reason why GM did not do that! You will float the valves on a bone stock LT1 @6500 rpm. Since stock is 5700 rpm, you should leave it alone until you upgrade the valvetrain. Stock springs=junk.

NO, it's not safe, and besides, you wouldn't be making any power up there anyway. A stock LT1 even with long tubes won't make power past probably 5800rpm or so. My LT4 peaks at 6000, and although it's safe to rev to 6500, I only push it that high at the end of the quater just to avoid shifting.

Like Evan said, there is no reason to rev it that high. 5800 is where you should shift at the most on a stock engine.

I normally set the rev limiter at 6000 for stock or nearly stock cars.

I'd set it a 6200. Even though you will probably get maxed out around 5700 +- you don't want to hit the sucker at a 6000 shift. JMHO

Just a note guys, shift points are not based on where the max power point is. It's based on your TQ curve. If the rwtq in your current gear at your current RPM falls below the rwtq in the next gear at the RPM you shift into, then you shift. Otherwise you run to the highest RPM possible before the engine can't handle it, as long as there is ample TQ available. The peak HP point means very little.

BTW, the stock cam drops off very quickly in TQ above 4700 rpm, and there is not reason to shift much higher than the stock redline. Put a different cam in there and it's a different story.

I'm with him, there isn't much reason to shift over 6000 on the stock cam.

But if you do have a cam, IMO I wouldn't want to rev over 6500 on the stock bottom end.

I have mine set at 6000 so that I can shift at 5800 and not hit the rev limiter.
