Why wont my car hold a charge?
Why wont my car hold a charge?
Its got a new battery, starter, and alternator and when I when out this morning, it wouldnt start. The starter and battery are a few weeks old and the alternator is 3 days old. I havent driven the car but for just a minute after the new alt. went on. Do you think that since I havent driven the car much, the new alternator hasnt had a chance to re-charge the battery? What else could it be? I have been busy with finals, work, and the girlfriend and that leaves no time for the car.
Well, it died when I figured out that the alternator was dead and then when I went to start it this last time, it was dead. So no more than twice. Otherwise, its brand new. the battery has been dead for over a day now. I guess Ill have the battery re-charged tomorrow. Thanks for the reply.
I would recommend you take he battery back where you got it and have them test it. Hopefully it will test bad.
Once you drain a regular car battery (non-deep cycle) once it will never be the same.

The "retained accessory power" RAP feature can sometimes go haywire if you have a stock sound system.
When you turn car off and you can still see the time with the radio off is a good indication that the draw is from this feature. The LED should go blank when car is shut off.
I thought the time should always be displayed and learned about this the hard way.
good luck

Its a WalMart battery. Ill exchange it tomorrow.
As for the "RAP", how would I check that? Im not sure if I understand. So, if I turn off my car with the doors closed and the radio turned off, the clock should not stay lit? Or is it with the doors open? Sorry, its late.
Thanks alot.

When you shut down car with radio playing, the radio should play until doors are open, once doors are open the LED should go blank.
He has a 1993. I don't think there is any LED (I know my 1995 does not have one). There were changes to RAP in 1996.
Now, if you are referring to the flourescent radio display, that is different.

if that still doesnt work start pulling fuses over night and see if that helps. If you have a multimeter you can pull the fuses and use it to test the amprege across the fuse terminals and that will tell you which circuit is getting shorted or is bad
