Why is my car so slow

When i first bought the car it had 98,000 miles on it and its best time at the track was a 15.1 at 90 mph with nothing done to it accept for a k&n air filter i have a a4 with 2.73 gears in it but i dont think it should run that slow. My car recently just quit cuase of a fuel pump could that have been the reason why it ran so bad?

I'm not sure how much the fuel pump will slow you down, but i big problem is the 2.73's, but even at that i think stock cars with 2.73's run around 14.5's?? I'm not sure but those gears will slow you down alot.

I would suggest 3.73s gear since you have an a4. You could go to 4.11s but that would be up to you. Some people like 3.73s because you get better gas mileage and it still makes it easy to drive on the freeway with out your rpm's being so high.

where are you located? I run at a track in Denver, CO at 5900 ft above sea level and that sounds almost right.

have you had your car scanned for codes? Ever change the fuel filter, plugs, wires, etc? Are there any problems such as the engine sputtering, backfiring or any hesitation?

(no hijacking intended) but my car seems to be a little slow too. when i bought my car i took it to the track and all i could get was a 14.7@93 on a 2.160ft. dont know what it was but i think it was a combonation of bad plugs/wires/filter and crappy weather, plus damn drag radials didnt hook right all night. im just about done w/ the whole tune up(plugs/wires/filter/egr) and ill see how she runs in a few weeks.

my best suggestion to get some better times is do a complete tune-up get a cutout, some DR's, and some 3.73's which should put you around high 13's low 14s w/ a decent 60ft. also you arent that far above sea level, but maybe humidity is killing your times. where i live the sea level is like 250 but humidity is around 88-90% at times.

I can throw in my two cents here.I have a 96 z28 vert with the crappy 2.73s also. For mods have g2 induction, holley powershot,
airfoil,1le bellows,tb bypass,160stat.I have hpp but tuning and shifting were set to stock and have gms maf but took it off for the track trip since was having some problems with some codes and consistent mph.
I had one code for iat something and changed it out before track and didn't see it again.Other codes were egr and I have that blocked off.

I ran three runs at track.Don't have the weather stats and density air.Track is at 1600 feet I think within a few feet.
I went down there with other 94z that has run high 13s at same track last year or year before. But he had et streets although worn out ones last trip.

Traction appeared to be horrible and times of all cars like even ls1s seemed to be slower than you would think.

I ran 15.06 at 93.58 with a 2.46 60ft.
I then ran a 14.96 at 94mph with a 2.38 60ft
and lastly a 14.96 again at 94.39 mph with a unknown 60ft it wasn't reading that run.
Buddies 94z that is lighter than my vert he weighs only 120 I weigh 240 too. His mods are pulley, flowmaster catback, borla ypipe, some type of induction and airfoil,1le bellows.Thats it.
he is auto with 3.23 gears.

I have two of his runs recorded as we ran against each other twice. He got a 14.54 at 97.63mph with a 3.52 60ft and a 14.87 at 97.36mph with a 2.65 60ft.He also ran a 16.5 yeah not a type with some seriously messed up 60ft he was spinning and fishtailing so bad he had to get out of it.Like I said the track was terrible on street tires.

So if you correct our times to see level I think you get around 14.6 or so for me at like 97mph and around 14.2 at around 101 for him and if he could have gotten a 2.0 60ft likely that would put him like deep in the 13s at sea level and me like around the 14 flat mark.I am pretty sure we had both terrible density air and
terrible track surface. Not a good combo on pure street rubber.

And I absolutely hate my gears.I plan on swapping in some from my 99 ta which has 3.42.Combined with a nice 2800 to 3000 or so stall think that will give me what I want to see and of course some drag radails to go with that stuff.Only problem is need a rollbar then to run the vert as it should be in the 13s with the gears and stall and drag tires for sure.

no i mean before it died it didnt have any hesitations or anyting but i thought it might have been the fuel pump not sending enough fuel to compensate for alll that horse power so it couldnt support it so as result i got bad times think that could be??

go with some 373 gears and a torque converter.

have you decided on what pump youre going with?....a stock perfect working fuel pump was robbing my brothers truck on the top end, put in a new hardcore walbro, picked up about 3 tenths on that alone....just a thought

Sure, it'd be faster, but it wouldn't fix the problem.

.

My 93 was running crappy. finally it was cutting out badly so= out came the stock pump and I added a Walbro/Granatelli 255 l per hr $129.00 from Summit. Replaced it cutting thru the sheetmetal using the trapdoor method. That new pump makes quite a difference when the fuel supply is crappy. The pressure regulator has alot to do with it also, but if the fuel supply is not there the fuel pressure regulator cant make up for it. You will see a small improvement with the new pump but even more performance improvement with better gears.
Regardless, get a new fuel pump.
Want to see some crappy track times? Get your best pair of shoes and push the Z28 with a dead fuel pump down the track...
A whole new meaning to 60 FOOT times.
