Why does my Trans Am die in 3rd gear?

This is a race between me (mods in sig) and my buddies 94 Z28(2.73s) with Magnaflow muffler, gutted cat, ICM cooling, TB bypass, Moroso CAI, B&M shift kit and a MadZ28 Tune from a 30 mph roll.

I start in first, shift to 2nd quickly around 40 and then into 3rd around 60. You'll see he really REALLY pulls on me when I'm in 3rd? I'm guessing he's just reaching his powerband in 2nd while I'm still climbing?

He also traps about .3 mph higher then me at the track... is my car slow or does he have a freak? I've heard Trans Am's are a bit heavier, the wing, ground effects, seats, headlights etc. Is this true?

Also I have the M29 gearbox... this is what it looks like factoring in the rear end.

GR -- M29 -- 94+
1 -- 9.60 -- 9.10
2 -- 6.68 -- 6.09
3 -- 4.62 -- 4.44
4 -- 3.23 -- 3.42
5 -- 2.58 -- 2.53
6 -- 2.00 -- 1.71

TIA,

I would say his muffler choice and CAI performe better than yours.

Im not sure but i would think he is still in 2nd gear pulling hard when you shift to 3rd.

I duno you but maybe you arnt to good at shifting either.

Your times to seem a lil slow, how long has it been since you had a full tune up?

He's in 2nd till well into the 90 mph range with 2.73's! If I'm cruising at 80 mph and nail it, mine used to downshift into 2nd a @ 80 mph! LOL Now with the 3.42's, I'm in 3rd by 75ish I think.

Couple things ... One, I did notice that you definatly shift lsower than I do on the 2-3 shift. Practice up on your shifting, but DO NOT accidently put it back into first. Its better to loose a race, and learn a little slower, than to blow the engine/tranny/clutch ...

Also, Its hard to tell, but it sounds like you short shifted it going into either 2nd or 3rd I forget?

Actually, I recently did a tune up about 2000 miles ago, map sensor, ignition wires, oil, oil filter, o2 sensors, spark plugs, seafoamed (all that I can think of for now)

Are Flowmaster mufflers really that restrictive? I keep reading that? What kind do you suggest.

As for shifting, yea I got a pos ebay shifter. I'm looking to by a Pro 5.0 right now.

edit: and my Pacesetter Longtube Headers and Off-Road Y are in the way, that should help me out some

if you do need driving practice, make sure you get some (not saying you do, just saying if). Be realistic, 'cause no mods will help you if you can't shift it.

Get a shift light and use it, shift right when the thing lights up (don't pay attention to the tach), and set it to light exactly where you want. That might help with the short shifting.

Hey, I didn't ask about shifting. I didn't rush that shift because I wasn't aiming to break any times and seeing I thought I was gonna continue to pull away no need to powershift.

Re: Why does my Trans Am die in 3rd gear?

I never said powershift it. I didnt mean it like that. I only powershifted my car a couple times. I dont like it. It seems like stuff should break.

I never "needed" that extra 10th or two.

But, the shift was a tad slower than the previous. And it seemed like it was shifted a few RPM's early. Thats all.
