So, who has uncoated headers??? Have you ever had any probs. since they are uncoated???? I know that they will rust and junk but will they cause any other probs. I have heat resistant wires going in so that isn't much of a prob. as long as they don't touch. thanks

Hey,

I've got SLP non-coated 1 3/4" shortie headers. They are stainless steel and have NO signs of rust. These header (on my car) does not leak whatsoever. Plug access is a PITA as you probably already know.

I think a lot depends on where you live as to how well they will hold up. I live in Florida and had MAC uncoated headers on my 94Z for like 5 years. Here is what they looked like when they were coming off...

Not NEW looking but not bad either for 5 years

I will never buy headers again unless they are coated.

Why's that? I've been debating the issue for a while now. I've been thinking about uncoated to save money (don't really care how they end up looking). I figure if people haven't had any problems with them it shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I do.

I've got uncoated macst. I got them used, 2 years old and they looked pretty good. A fresh coat of paint was applied and we'll see how long they hold up. I've only had them about a month so far.

Like Brent said, I think it depends on where you live how well the headers will hold up. My dad has spray can coated headers on his '55, which have been installed for oh... 15 years now. The car is garaged and driven once or twice a week They barely have any rust on them at all.

People in northern climates will most likely have more problems with uncoated because of salt on the road for several months out of the year.

If you live in the desert they should last forever.
There's a lot of other metal under the hood and it doesn't corrode that fast, the main reason for coated is to keep heat out from under the hood. Of course the stock manifolds aren't coated, so if you can keep your wires from touching the headers you should be allright. If you want them to look pretty you can always get some chrome ones, summit sells chrome bbks w/ y-pipe for less than $400.

I live in SC so we have very high humidity. would that cause a problem??? Mine are black and sprayed black w/ the thermo-tec high temp paint. How long do you think that color will hold up??? thanks

There's mine, hardly any time really on them, I've only had the car running a month or so. Anyways, the paint fell off after like 10 mins of running the car and of course they rust pretty quick after that.

I haven't heard of anyone ever having the paint last that long, but I guess you can find out.

The humidity shouldn't be too much of a problem, most rust is from liquid water getting to things. They might not look perfect but if that's not your intention they should hold up for quite a while. Just keep an eye out for rust, it's like cancer, once you've got it it spreads quickly and it will come back sooner- gotta get rid of that stuff as soon as you see it.

I think that headers probably abide by the same principles as the rest of the exhaust, as long as you drive it every once in a while and let them get fully heated up it should at least drive the moisture out.

Letting it rust or not is up to you. But if you let it go there's no going back, basically.

You can clean rust off with some high grit sandpaper or possibly rubbing compound depending on how deep it is. If the rust is allover the place there's no point in trying though, you'll just make it easier for the metal underneath to corrode.
