Who here is running Mobil 1 15w50?

For those of you that do, would any of you be willing to send a sample of your used oil in for an analysis so we can see what kind of wear numbers are produced. I still believe it's too thick for the LT1, but am still very curious to see the results. It's going to get cold here soon, so I certainly can't try it out myself right now, but for those of you in the hot south I figured some of you must use it.

There are a lot of good oil analysis labs you could use in the US, just do a google search to find one near you, then post the results here. Ideally you want to run the oil at least 3000-5000 miles or more before taking the sample to get a good idea of how it's performing.

Patman, where do you buy the German Castrol? I can't seem to find it.

So far the German Castrol 0w30 is only sold in Autozone in the US, but I expect it'll be in more stores soon. In Canada it was only at Walmart at first, but now is showing up at Canadian Tire. I should have my first oil analysis on this stuff in my car in October. I've been running it in my sister's Civic since March with excellent results.

I started using Mobil1 15w50 on the advice of a local engine builder. I am very leary of how well 5w30 is protecting the engine during the hot summer months here. I have never had an oil analysis performed before. I might consider it.

I definitely suggest it, it'll give you a lot of good info. I agree that most 5w30s out there are too thin for hot summer weather, those like Mobil 1 are on the thin end of the 30wt range, and can't protect like a slightly thicker oil will.

That's why I think an oil at the top end of the 30wt range (like Amsoil, Redline or the German made Castrol) are the thinnest oils I would suggest running in an LT1.

What do you consider "hot summer weather?" I tend to run 5w-30 in the winter, fall, and spring and 10w-30 in the summertime.

I checked my local Autozone. No German made Castrol. Guess I'll try Wally world.

I run it in my 96SS but just started doing so maybe 20,000 miles ago and the car has 102,000 miles on it now.

My buddy runs it in his 96SS as well which has around 50,000 miles on it and he has had his oil analyzed a couple of times I believe. I'll ask him if he still has the paperwork for ya!

Thanks Brent! In some rare situations 15w50 might work out well, especially if someone road races a lot and sees very high oil temps (which end up thinning out the oil quite a bit anyways, so it ends up being not quite so thick)

I also know of two guys who each have around 200,000 or 300,000 miles on their trucks and have owned them since new. Both have run 15w50 since NEW. I'll see if I can talk them into an oil sample... that should be a good test

Thumbs up

Brent, after getting the oil analyzed and seeing that it came back with no problems at all ( and remember I ran the crap out of the car knowing that I was sending the oil in ) I think I threw the paper work away, but being the pack rats ( WE ) are I might have one in the console

The two Rangers you where talking about are now at 308000 miles and the other is at 278000 both have been using 20/50 NAPA oil since new ( NAPA NON-SYN oil, here in florida NAPA brand oil is Valvoline in a NAPA container, prob the same in other states also ) both trucks run just fine and use no oil between changes, and as busy as we are most of the time thats between 4 to 6000 miles between changes...Also Gary's Aero Star has 322000 on it, he now uses Mobil one 15/50

Also don't forget my one customer that is a courier ( he follows wide load rigs all over the U.S. ) ... he is now at 503000 miles on his vehicle and has been using 15/50 mobile one since new, he changes his oil at 10000 miles and the filter every 4000 miles, now that I would not recommend but his is almost all hiway driving... Also Mickey ( Duke) at 301000 miles 15/50 mobile one since new.....

either way I have used 20/50 in all my vehicles until 15/50 came out and I'm very happy with " my " results !!

Take it for what it's worth
