There's an old replacement plate that covers that hole up so you can cut holes in it to mount more gauges, but I don't remember who carried it. I bought mine about a year ago and still haven't installed mine yet...

Yeah, I remember seeing a panel to cover up that hole next to the cigarette lighter. It was available solid so you could cut your own holes or with 2 holes already cut. I can't remember who carried it and didn't find it with a quick search either.

Well, gages would fit in the A/C holes in Firebirds. That's where Fred aka Injuneer has them. But yes, you could fabricate a cover for the tape storing (is it?) compartment. I've seen that setup on some cars and it looked nice.

I am fabricating 2 panels right now. 1 for the compartment next to the lighter w/ n2o switches and a wideband 02 readout and 1 for the cd player location w/ trans. temp. and oil press. gauges. (I also have n2o press. and fuel press. in the A-pillar. w/ a 5" monster tach on the left side of the dash.) I will post some pics when I am finished.

I've seen a plate made that held a small gauge in the AC vent in a camaro, looked pretty sweet actually. Lol, random thought, but maybe you could hang one above the rearview mirror from the headliner or something? Hey, I guess if you're desperate...
