When do you upgrade?

I was wondering when you need to upgrade your harmonic dampner. Is it dependant on HP or cubic inches or neither? Building a new 383 (obviously-sig) and I hadn't even consider if I need to go to a better dampner. Thanks

Now would be a great time to do it, wouldn't you say?

The short version of what Smokey says on the subject is this:

1) Short Track or Drag engines that have to rev quickly and are re-built on a regular basis should use smaller and lighter balancers.

2) Endurance engines (street engines are, by definition, endurance engines) should run larger and heavier balancers.

3) Use the balancer your camshaft manufacturer recommends for your crankshaft and application.

I tend to take Smokey's advice very seriously, so I would recommend to you that you ask your crankshaft vendor what they suggest, then TAKE their advice. Your crankshaft will thank you for it.

ALso, your machine shop should be able to balance it along with crank. That's what I had done.
