When do you really need a LT4 intake???

>It kind of seems like everyone thinks they need the LT4 intake to make gobs of power... but you can do that with the stock intake and a little porting here and there.
the only reason I got mine was because way back in 2001 they were less than $200.00 so I got myself some AFR 195cc LT4 heads to match. But I knew I was going forced induction so I ported the intake at the BBK/Edlebrock 58mm throttle body.

So when do you think you need a LT4 intake? When a LT1 just won't cut it?

When you need one to mate to LT4 or other similar aftermarket heads that the manifold is made to fit.

yes but don't the aftermarket LT1 heads flow just as well as their LT4 (I know the LT4 stuff will be better number) but is it worth the $$$ for people that will keep this mostly street driven?

A port matched LT1 manifold will be fine with some good heads. IOW, you don't have to go to an LT4 manifold for power (if that is what you are asking).

>yes thats my point. seems like the whole LT1 world believes that they need a LT4 to make real power

btw- what does IOW mean
me = computer illiterate but I'm trying

I'm amazed by that myself with all the info that's available these days and all that's been written on the subject. On the other hand, when I first got interested in modding my car that was also my impression - that it had to make more power. I think it's a perfectly natural new guy assumption. And when they were under $200, it was really no big deal. But now that they are going for a lot of money, it seems like there is some perceived greater value in having one - maybe because they have become scarce. Maybe because guys think they need them for afteramrket heads or whatever.

>Thank you my point exactly... so new guys save your money and use what you have, but definately go supercharged

I made 420rwhp on home ported LT1 intake, just get good heads etc.. My Torque is good too, I think you really need it when you go AFR 220 heads where you actually need one, otherwise not much point.

Re: When do you really need a LT4 intake???

Like others stated, LT4 manifold is only needed when you buy an LT4 "style" head, like AFR195's, 210's, etc.

Fuly ported AFR LT4 castings will demolish an LT1 casting...

To close the gap, you can get TFS heads that utilize the LT1 intake.

The only people who think that are noobs who are too lazy to research. Hardly "the whole LT1 world."

Actually I have AFR220's and the first thing I did was get rid of the LT4 intake because it doesn't flow that well.

Re: When do you really need a LT4 intake???

as a LT4 owner... i will say the LT4 and LT1 intakes if not the same.... very close to the same... my LT4 intake (only mod: port matched to heads) flowed 483cfm - a bone stock lt1 intake on the same flowbench within 2 hours flowed 476cfm - 7cfm difference

flowed from throtle body openings to cylinder #3 port - all other ports blocked

the only difference is the port locations

now my heads flow just over 300cfm per intake port - and most after market heads wont go above 350cfm
so... i will say the lt1 intake is more than enough for any application

now.. aftermarket intakes w/ different runner volumes may make a difference in performance and where peak power/tq is... but the basic design of the LT1 and LT4 is the same

now - lt1 heads to lt4 heads... different - very different
