What's up with the one wheel peel?

I just got back from the track and noticed that sometimes when i was doing a burnout that one wheel was spinning unstead of both.....when it would do this the car would wheel hop bad off of the line.....i had one burnout that did both of them and it didn't wheel hop....Is my diff. going out? how can you fix this?

I was under the impression that if you were turning, only one wheel drove the car. If you're in a straight like, both pulled. You weren't turning were you?

i don't think....i mean i don' think that the wheel was turned....could have been though....it was in the burnout box.....if it was turned it couldn't have been much....

i thought the limited slip diff in our cars prevented 1 wheel from supplying all the power even when turning, well unless its dead of course and needs to be replaced.

your diff is on its way out id say. The rear only turns one wheel when your turning. The only reason it does that is because when your cornering both wheels dont turn the same speed. It should be spinning both during a burnout.

how old is the fluid? It wouldn't hurt to change to see if it gets better.

Geezer powered 03-15-2004 06:11 AM

your diff is done. slp has take off replacements for a 100 bucks

I'll add this, since it looks like you're about to spend a lot of money. When I first got my Z I had a lot of problems with the diff. It was making some horid, I mean absolutely awful noises while going around tight corners and it would randomnly engage and disengage (i.e. one wheel peel) I changed out the fluid and put in the limited slip additive and I've had 10,000 miles of absolutely trouble free operation. I launch on Nittos all the time at the track. This is a 168,000 mile diff, that I want to blow up so I can upgrade and it has been wonderful.

Change the fluid first, spend the $30 tops it'll cost you and see what happens. :)

We call this "one legged 13itch" syndrome. My Iroc only spun one tire, and two when it had its good days. The rearend in done.

That sucks....the fluid that is in it doesn't have but about 500 miles on it....maybe....i guess i only need to replace the diff? I might just go get one of the knock off's that slp sells...

You just replaced the rear diff fluid? Did you remember to add the GM limited slip additive?

97Camaro007 03-15-2004 09:40 PM

nope....do i need it?

scoobysnax83 03-15-2004 09:41 PM

uh, yea, you have to put it in. Nothing but troubles with the clutches without...

97Camaro007 03-15-2004 09:45 PM

do you think that it will be ok to drive on it? without any burnouts.....

scoobysnax83 03-15-2004 09:47 PM

no, its not. Everytime you go around a curve the clutches are working to prevent wheel hop and keep traction. You have probably already fried your diff because of not having it in there. If you can get a take off diff from SLP for $100 then thats how I would go. :)
