What's a good "first" clutch?

Study break time...

Once the engine is back together, I'll have ~380+ at the wheels going through a totally stock A4 drivetrain with salad shooters and OEM radials. Eventually I'll swap in a T56 if I can handle working a month of 60-hour weeks at my summer job.

Anyways, what kind of clutch should I go with for this setup? As far as a shifter I know I'll probably go with a Pro 5.0 and a short stick. The car will see a little track time here and there over the summer, but will mostly be a street car.

As far as skill goes, I can granny shift and make it around town without stalling and looking like a complete rod, but other than that I suck.

...and it's back to the books for me.

I learned on a crappy clutch, and when I got my car now i had to get used to the clutch that i had in it. Basically what is comes down to is that inless you are going burn it up a lot learning, i would get a clutch that you would like to have later down the road b/c you are not going to want to replace it then.

My suggestion. When I bought my car the clutch went out on it right away. I didn't have much money so I bought a cheap clutch (OEM cluch from GM was about $1000CND at my dealer ). Ever hear of dynapak? Any way, it only lasted about 10,000 miles of little abuse. So then I got smart and bought a SPEC stage 3 ceramic. Definatly easy to drive, maybe not as nice as stock but its very streetable. It has take a fair amount of abuse so far, so Im happy with it. Buy a good clutch now, or keep plans for a new one sometime soon in the future. BTW my car is pretty much stock. Just exhast work.

The stock clutch is pretty good if you get a decent brand.
I've seen Valeo brand clutch sets go on Ebay for like $200 for an LT1, thats a steal IMO.

I went with the SLP clutch when my stocker went out at 50K. I've had it in for a year now with 7000 miles on it, abuse it pretty hard, 30 launches on DR's from 2-4K and still holding great, no signs of slipping. I was around 300rwhp last year before the cam. Well see how it holds up this year with a little more power

you can get RAM clutches at summitracing.com for cheaper than a pepboys clutch! They are good clutches too.

Well it was in my car. I don't know if Dynapak offers different levels of clutches but I got the normal one. I should have taken pics of the disc when I took it out. It treated me good for 2 races. Then it just slipped (this is after 1000kms) . It would grab good at anything under 3000rpms. But anything over and it seemed like the power just got cut off. Funny thing is, when I took the cluch out in January I looked at it and I couldn't find anything wrong with it. In fact it looked brand new! So I was like WTF? I looked a little closer at the disc and you know how there is metal between the material on each side of the disc? Well the material was coming loose and the metal between was bent a bit. The low end torqe the LT1 has seemed to rip the disc apart. So I installed my spec stage 3 ceramic and wow what a difference.

Do it right the first time and go with a McLeod. I just installed one and it is by far the best clutch I've had in any car.
