How often do u change ur oil?
i use mobil 1 10w30 synthetic, and i change it every 3k miles or 3 months, my dad just told me since its synthetic i can wait alot longer to change it , what do u guys think? how often do u guys change it?

I use regular dino oil so 3k miles is the longest I leave the oil in there and keep that schedule religiously. Synthetics however are made to protect better and last longer so there is no need to change it out as often unless those 3k miles are largely stop and go traffic.

The whole point of synthetics is that they last longer and dont break down from the heat cycling like the conventional oil. So yes, it is ok to go longer with a synthetic oil....but, it does get dirty just as fast as a normal oil, something to keep in mind.
If you change your oil religously every 3k miles then synthetic oil is overkill IMO. If you like to let it go 5-6k miles then sythetic is for you.

Synthetics last longer... that's one of thier characteristics.
When I have the cash Oil gets changed every 3K - 3.5K when I need to wing it 4K-5K .... Took the Valve covers and Intake off the car recently at a 5K stretch... things looked very clean still (clean in the sense of average used oil). Been doing this routine since I got the car 3X,000 miles ago... and I'm talking rough agressive driving. So you decide...

synthetics handle higher heat ranges, and they do clean better... but in normal heat ranges (i.e. you DON'T have a 7000+rpm race motor with 700+hp) dino works just as well.
If you run dino, don't go longer than 3000 miles as the cleaning properties of your oil will have problems. With synthetics you may be able to extend it to 4 or 5 without problems... but then you're just breaking even so why pay the extra cost?!
Personally I use Mobile 1 10W30 every 3000 miles... at 180,000 miles right now and she's as strong as ever.
oil changes are NOT about "the oil"... they're about removing:
- combustion byproducts (from blow-by)
- acidic fluid (from the byproducts about)
- water (from condensation due to repeated heat cycles)
and REPLACING:
- filtering capacity (with a new, empty filter)
- cleaning package (higher levels in premium oils, mostly synthetics)
- anti-wear additives package (for when the oil-film DOES break down... Redline and Mobile 1 use alot of Moly for this, few dino-oils have the same levels or quality of additives)
Always use the largest capacity filter you can fit, and go to the lowest micron filter you can find... this will help keep things running smooth as well.

Has a single one of you done ANY research? I have seen UOAs for 15k miles with M1 in another application that was even a turbo and the oil was still good and clean enough to use wear was fine as well. Now that is not always the case but synthetic absolutely can go over 3K, hell dino can these days as long as you don't have a dirt problem. The 3K mile interval came about back when you had poor machining combined with lesser oil and carbs dumping raw fuel into the cylinders washing them down and contaminating the oil, those conditions just do not apply today. As for oils if again you did research 30wt. M1 is not the ideal choice for the LT1, OK at best, the 5w-30 qnd 10w30 M1 specifically run thin, not great for a hard usage motor.
Before you disagree with me do some reading here http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi these guys are into oil like the people here are into power.

ive always done about 2500 miles. I judge by how the oil look and how ive driven the last couple months. I usually drive it hard so i change the oil more frequently. I use conventional btw. mobil 10w30 .

If you take a Cummings or a Cat they change on hours run time.If you half their hours they recommend and multiplt it by 60MPH you come out at about 15,000 miles for an oil change. Those big diesels run a hell of a lot dirtier than an LT-1 and take more heat and abuse. And most run turbos.Do you think these 18 wheelers change at 3000 miles? They would be changing oil more than hauling freight.Run an oil sample on your oil at 3000 miles, the results will surprise you.
Do you think the oil company's are out to sell oil or what?
