Most people are either running stock or ported stockers

the answer to that question depends solely on what you want to do with the car.

I have the stock LT4 heads, and eventually want to get them ported.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into another LE vs. AI thread.

But, you're going about things the right way, do research before you buy.

It will don't worry.

And to the original poster best cylinder head for what? Heads aren't "one size fits all", there are best ones for each application.

I think his question is AFRs? Trickflows? Darts (do they make LT style heads?) Which would be the best CASTING to start with (i.e. which brand can you port more out of?)

Which is why I said ported stock, people are making great power out of ported stock you're not gonna find too much outside of stock heads unless you do something like convert a different set to reverse flow

Not so much the best head per say, so much as the best head for the set up. You dont need a set of AFRs if all you want is a 400HP 355.

if thats all he meant, then why didnt someone suggest the "search" function?

If all your asking is "who can port my stock heads/LT4 heads" then go to search and search "ported LT1 heads" I am sure you can read for weeks/months... you just wont get much info other than who likes which brand.

Here we go, I think these would work quite well for the LT1.

Most AFR fans will even say their "small" castings like under 210cc suck. They were good on Gen 1 motors because Gen 1 stock heads were so very bad. The stock LT1 heads are a BIG step ahead of the gen 1 stockers and AFR just reused gen 1 old ports in the LT1 castings. If you disagree please post RESULTS, basically all the 180-195cc AFR LT1 results I have seen have been downright poor.

I agree with those who are saying we need to know the usage, BUT beyond that ported stock castings are an exellent choice for the vast majority of us. Advanced Induction is my choice for the portwork.
A friend who sold me the core heads I used is kicking himself for buying TPIS ported AFRs because his stroker in a Camaro is slower than my stock shortblock Caprice same gears, stall within 100rpms and like 600lbs weight difference in his favor, he runs more duration and lift too. Says if he ever has reason to do heads again he will ditch the AFRs in favor of AI ported GM castings.

On a wild blower build or something like that I would look at ported Trickflows, the large chamber makes getting lower compression easier without a big dish in the piston.
