What Valve Springs...
What Valve Springs...
ok i plan on doing a cam swap in the next month, and im starting to make plans and gather parts..
i plan on running cc XE 230/236 112lsa cam, harland sharp rockers, comp r lifters, and doing the 95+ opti conversion...
i will do heads within the next year
what springs would be best for my setup.... i would PERFER not to have the heads machined for the springs.... but if a must i will do so...
what springs/pushrods should i use?
part numbers and other misc parts would be most helpful

I would recommend a double spring set up. Call Combination Motorsports (702-798-8504) and they can get you the right double springs, retainers, locks and locators that will fit and work. You do not have to machine the head if you grind on the locators a lil. This is very simple and can be done in about 5 minutes on a bench grinder.
If you use a double spring with a flat shim instead of a locator, the spring can walk around, cause valve float, chew up seals, etc. Crane offers a kit as well (#10308-1) but it does not come with the locators. You would need to but them seperately. These locators are very important so make sure and get some. The Comp part # is 4771, not sure of the Crane part #.

The 612 kit is a single spring set up and it is GREAT for the $$$. It has plenty of seat pressure, open pressure, travel, requires no machining, etc, but it is still a single spring. This cam and a 6200 RPM shift point and ocasionnally going a little higher will be fine.
If you are gonna take the engine to 6500 RPM often or ever decide to go with a larger cam, a double spring will be needed. It would be a shame to save a few $$$ on springs and then lose HP or have to buy others in the future.
If you only have $80 in the budget for springs, retainers and locks, this is probably your ONLY choice and it will have to be OK. If you have another $100 or so to spend, the double spring set up and Comp 4771 locators are "nicer" and will definitely work to 6500 RPM.
All of this is assuming a 1.6 rocker is used. If you are using a 1.5 rocker, the 612's will probably be fine.
