What size is the plug above the oil cooler?

What size is the plug above the oil cooler?
It looks like a 1/4" pipe plug should fit in there, but I can't get the damn thing to fit!
I even just went out and bought a 1/4" NPT tap to try and clean up the threads a bit (the block was painted), but that thing won't fit either!
What size could it be?

Well fruck......that's the same size plug and tap I'm trying to use in it and they aren't f'ing working.
I wish the damn machine shop hadn't taken these plugs out.....or that they would have at least put them back in!!
