What size Drag Radials can I fit on the rear?

I am looking into getting some new tires and possibly wheels for the rear end. I am not Hooking up too well on the street. I have notbeen to the track but I'd like some wheels and tires I can use for track days and maybe some street play.
Im not sure what wheel size?
What side wall size?
or How wide of a tire?

Right now I have 275 40 17 Kuhmo's. I don't have any complaints in the tire but I need some more traction.

I run 275/40/17 Nitto 555 dr's on the street and at the track sometimes, they will give you all the traction you need and they wear fairly decent on the street too. Most people report getting around 15k miles out of them on street driving. It's about the best street/strip tire you can get. BFG dr's may hook a little better but they wear about 3x faster.

From what I have seen, BFG's hook up considerably better...I am looking to get 1.5's 60's on BFG's.

I heard many folks get away with running a 285/40/17 tire on a 9 inch rim with no clearance problem. You MIGHT get SLIGHTLY more bite with the SLIGHTLY taller and wider 285 tire.

Thx,
Claude

It sounded like he was looking for them primarily for street racing, if that's the case I would recomend Nitto dr's. If the tires are more for track use I would agree the BFG drs are the better choice. If you want one to do both well and to use for everyday driving I would go with Nitto's. I run the 17" nitto dr's on the street and have a set of 16" BFG dr's for use at the track.

I was thinking of getting a set of wheels for the track that can run on the street legally. Im not sure what route I should go with the tires. 2 years ago I got the corvette wheels and Kuhmo tires, sso I don't want to shell out more money on wheels unless I get a set of wheels just for DRL's I see so many different sizes and Im nt sure what is best. 15 16 17 inch rim? I know I want at least 275 or bigger since I run 275 now. As far as the side wall, Im clueless on what the benifets are in having adeeper sidewal for hooking up. I knnow the handeling improved with the 275 40 compaired to the 275 50.

315/35/17 nittos here. Only one complaint, where im lowered they rub under hard connering. If you had an 11" wheel then a 335/35/17 would be awesome!!

You want a taller profile tire for drag racing, a 50 series tire is going to hook better than a lower profile 35 or 40 series. With a taller sidewall profile and lower air pressure of like 18-20lbs you get a bigger contact patch than you would with a lower profile tire. Lower profile tires with stiffer sidewalls are much better for cornering and handling. If you want a set for the track and occassional street use I would go with a set of 255/50/16 BFG dr's. I use them on the track on a pair of salad shooters that I got very cheap. They hook as good or better than my 275/40/17 Nitto dr's I use on the street.
