What are the signs of a bad lifter?

I'm getting a "ting-ting, pa-ting" sound from what looks like the #2 cylinder.

I pulled the valve cover and the rockers are fine. The "tinging" sounds like its coming from beneath that.

If your lifter is bad, you will not hear it from the lifter. The noise will be the valve hitting against the piston as it travels through its compression and exhaust strokes. Should also feel a loose of power and how much power depends on how many lifters are bad. Trying adjusting that valve with the engine running.

I just came in from doing that. I think its worse now.

Its also intermittent. Tings every 2-3 secs.

Where can I get 2 Comp R lifters ASAP?

Could it be an exhaust leak where the header meets the head?

Its intermittent.

The header bolts are tight.

Ticks enough to set off the knock sensor.

They usually don't give much warning when they go. The bearing assembly and lifter wheel goes first, then it takes the cam out, then the loss in oil pressure.... inevitable doom.

If you suspect a problem, the quick check is to set up a dial-indicator/magnetic-base and check lift at the reatainer. If you have a moving valve seat or something weird going on, it may very well show up. Next step would be a leakdown test on the suspect cylinder. One step at a time... let us know what you find and we'll go from there.

Re: What are the signs of a bad lifter?

Ouch.

I have an important race next weekend.

Would I be able to tell if the lifter is shot by visually inspecting it? Would there be obvious signs of wear?

My oil pressure is a lot lower when the car gets hot than it used to be.

Anyone know who can overnight me a Comp R lifter?
