what should i do about this leak?
what should i do about this leak?
not too long ago i posted a thread about my engine leaking oil. i was pleased to see that many others' cars leaked also. it had been leaking for a while but never enough to add any to it. well a couple weeks ago i noticed the dipstick only had oil on 3 of the 4 holes. i added 1/2 quart and everything was ok for 2 or 3 weeks. yesterday i checked it again and it was down to the third hole on the dipstick again. i think its leaking right behind the crank pulley but im not for sure. what should i do about this, because i dont feel like putting oil in it as much as i do gas. ( its not that bad but it might get there) the more i think about it, the more expensive it seems. im kinda wanting some motor work, or a new motor over winter anyway, so what should i do?
Re: what should i do about this leak?
If its behind the crank pulley then it is probably the main seal. In that case, it would be a PITA, but if you know what your doing then you can do it for fairly cheap. How many miles on your car?
Re: what should i do about this leak?
119,000 miles on the clock. if its going to be a big deal and a pain in the @$$ just for a seal, i'll probably just wait and get another motor or have some motor work done eventually.

It's not very difficult to change if you have some tools and a day's time. Remove the optispark, water pump, crank hub, and the timing cover, and replace the seal in the timing cover. Just be careful when you remove the timing cover. Ripping the oil pan seal will not be fun.
Using a seal installer tool makes the job easy.

If it is just the crank seal, all you have to remove is the pulley and hub. Nothing else needs to come off. You will need a puller to get the hub off and maybe one for the pulley (or you could take them both off at the same time with the hub puller).
Make sure you research on how to get the hub off.

Re: what should i do about this leak?
depends on what tools you have...if you have an impact and lift it will be super easy, but i'm assuming you have no lift and probably not an impact... you don't have to have these, but you do have to have a 3 screw puller. there are two types of harmonic balancer pullers. one has three arms, and one has three screws... if you use the one with arms you'll probably pull the dampner off the hub. which of course is bad...anywho, there are four bolts on it, i believe they are 16mm, take the belt off, then take the three screws out and pry the pulley off, then take the middle bolt out about halfway, screw the three screws through the puller and into the shaft, then screw the middle down and start working it up...as you get it off the shaft you are gonna have to back the middle bolt out some more....you have to leave this bolt in or you will not have anything to push against.
