What rearend/gearing to go with?

So I just got done, my 95 LT1 383 forged everything, comp cam and guts, custom tune, etc. etc. Question is I still have stock rear, and stock gears, and am going to likely go with the S60 from strange engineering. Originally I was thinking that I would go with 4.11 gears (t-56 six speed in the car). Then I drove the car after it was all done....man, now i am thinking that i may go with 4.56 gears...Is there anyone running a similar set up? and if so, how do you like the 4.56 gears? I still want to be able to cruze down the highway at 80 mph without wrapping it up to much? Looking at the numbers though 4.56 should be ok with the sixth gear double overdrive. Thoughts Please? and thanks. Oh yeah the Cam's power band starts at 2000rpm not from idel or zero and feels like there is a little surge at low rpm, will the gearing help that go away at all?

I guess I should add, dyno on the car is 408 RWHP at 5800 rpm, & 400ft/lb TQ. I just want to be able to cross the line at around 6500, and then go to sixth out on the interstate and still be able to hear the radio?

I am new to the site but glad to be here thanks.

Yeah the cam is the only thing. With the comp I am running optimum range starts at 2000 rpm, and lots of others are likely with a cam that starts at idel to what ever so my thinking was since the opperating range of the cam is higher (starting at 2000) then the 4.56 would still be ok in 1st gear?

And thanks for the welcom

what cam are you running? a cam that starts around 2000, isn't all that aggressive compared to what some ppl on this board run

A lot of people that run 1/8 mile races run 4.56 gears. first would be totally worthless and getting traction would be an uphill battle. a lot of people prefer 4:10 or 4:11 gears... some even like 3:90 with the m6

Re: What rearend/gearing to go with?

Thanks for the input, but im looking for someone who actually has the 4.56 or 4.11 gears with a 6 speed trans to help me with some actual experience of what it is like and if they would change anythning. I have the ratios, MPH, gearing etc. numbers of my trans matched up with both 4.11 and 4.56 to see what MPH the gears would be at a given rpm, just wanted to hear from someone who has them in the car? Thanks for the input though.

Re: What rearend/gearing to go with?

I have the s 60 with 373 gears havent had the chance to run it two years and about to see what its like with the new motor. I was running a 125 shot on close to stock setup so a little less power than you putting down. I hadn't done anything to suspension but couldn't hook in first. It wasn't quite were I wanted to be at the end of the 1/8 or 1/4 but more power and hooking better in first would have had me close and its great gearing for the street and like a road course. It might be worth going the other way with higher gears and eliminate a shift(could end up being faster). If your not running a slick my guess is second may have traction problems too( drag radials didnt help me). I went from 373 to 456 in my truck and each has its advantages. Sorry I didnt really help with the info you want but its worth considering. With any luck my car will be back on the road by the weekend and if so could get you real world numbers on 373 gear at the end of1/4 as my motor will be close to your numbers without spray. Reguardless the strange is nice. Had to do some notching on the new torque arm to fit and couldn't run my dual 3" exhaust over the top, other than that its nothin but awesome.

Right on man that is good to know. I think I will love the S60 and can't wait to get that put in. The more I think about it sounds like the 4.11 will give me plenty and the 4.56 may be a little to much for what I am looking for. Thanks for the info.

I think you made the right choice there, if not you can always change it later if you decide to do more racing. 4.56 has never been a bonafide street gear in anything. It probably accounts for more trailer queens than any other gear.

So i see you are running kooks headers. How do you like them? I have a set of hooker shorties and the back driverside plug boot is damn near touching the header tube. I will likely go with another set but don't want to make sure there wont be any issues like on the ones I have now.

What size rear tires do you typically run? If you run a 29" rear tire you can easily go with a 4.56 rear gear and maintain decent streetable gearing.

Re: What rearend/gearing to go with?

Excatly what I was thinking. right now 26" stock. This is what has me going back and forth. I am going to put 18 x 10.5's in the rear 295/35 18? What are your thoughts on that? I know if you just say 4.56 gears people think wow thats way to high, but if you really start looking at the gearing of the t-56, and through in the opperating rpm of the cam (2000 - to whatever) then the larger tire size, all of a sudden 4.56 looks pretty practical...ok not practical streetable i guess I should say. I have not made a decision yet. I hate doing things twice don't want to do that here.
