What rear end gears do I have

Hi Guys,
I am just getting back into the camaro field again, I have been gone a long time. I had a 68 SS many years ago. 350 eng, 11:1 TRW's, Crane roller cam, cross ram with 2-650 spread bores, Mallory dual point, roller rockers.

About a month ago, I bought me a 96 Z28 and have been going through and noting all the mods. The guy I bought the car from is in IRAQ, he had his friend sell it for him. His friend said he had changed the rear end gears but doesn't know which gears were put in. So my question is, how can I tell what gears have been put in.

I also have a 70 OPEL GT that is powered by a 92' Camaro 3.1 with a S-10 T-5trans, 3-piece intake, custom ECM programming, cam, and a few other mods. Mustang 5.0's always have a good look at it's tail lights.

If it's an M6, they came stock with 3.42's, so he most likely upgraded to 3.73's or 4.10's. I'm not sure how you could tell, though.. Best guess says 4.10's, because that's what most M6 guys put in for the 1/4 mile. I don't know as many M6 guys who went from 3.42's to 3.73's as I do guys who went from 3.42's to 4.10's. The bigger jump in gears REALLY brings them alive down low in the 1/4.

stock was 3.42s, but i have 4.10s in my m6 and i turn 2000 rpms at 70. that may tell you. i would guess 3.73 would be about 1800 rpms at 70

At 70Mph my Tac also shows about 2000rpm's. I am getting about 26Mi per gal on the HWY, Is that possible with the 4.10's.

They're probably 4.10's. I don't think they'll kill your gas mileage *that* badly. So your tach reads 2000rpm at 70... Does your rear end sing to you? That's definitely another clue.

The car seems fairly quiet from the inside, its pretty air tight. You can just hear the exhaust roar. The car only has 50,000 mi, and was wevr well taken care of. It seems like it always want's to break the tires loose. When I go around corners, I have to be carefull not to give it to much gass or it will spin sideways.

Aren't there some GM gears out there that don't make any noise, but aren't as strong as the likes of Strange & Richmond gears, which sacrificed noise for strength? Might be why you're matching his 4.10's at 70 in 6th gear, but not hearing the gear whine.

What do you mean? Umm, some auto's came with 2.73's, most with 3.23's I believe. I've heard A4 owners see from 3.73's what M6 owners see from 4.10's, so I guess that's why they don't jump much higher..

Well when I'm on the freeway. I'm normaly doing 80ish in 6th at around 2000rpms. And I have the stock 3.42 gear. So I'm going to guess that you have the 3.73. But that's just a guess, I could be wrong.

Well it looks like I may have 4.10's. One mystery solved.

OK, so we have proven that people that drive Z's, Birds, and TA, are the smartest on the plannet. Now all I have to do is get you all to tell me what fuel inj. he put in. There is also a fuel pressure regulation system, I can't quite see it clearly but it has a label by the guage that says Accel. Are the Chevy injectors color coded like the Found-On-Road-Dead cars.

well first what makes you think that it has bigger injectors

now the afpr doesnt matter on our car becuas eif you up the fuel with the regualator the pcm see it and adjust back to stock by way of the pcm so if you want to change your a/f ratio it has to be done in the pcm. they are absolutly useless on our cars...except the 93s. but thats another story.

get back with us on the injectors. by the way if he change to a diferent size he had to have pcm tunning done to let the pcm know what it working with.

dont forget you are driving a computer with wheels. one fast computer huh.

I just assumed he changed them since there is a regulator setup and the injectors look like they just came out of the box. A nice blue color at that.
