Question At what power level should I replace the stock ignition box

I'm going to be doing new plugs and wires next week, and I was wondering when should I start thinking of upgrading my ignition box. So far I'm going to be going with ngk plugs and msd wires(maybe 8mm?) and that's all I have on my list right now. I did a little bit of searching so I'm going to change them out myself.

As far as mods go I only have a hooker cat-back on, and in the next 6 months I plan on having all bolt-ons(and possibly hotcam or cc305). So welcome to all opinions. And what determines the mm size of wires to use? Some say stay with the stock 7mm and some people use 8.5mm and don't have any problems. Thanks in advance.

Honestly size is not of concern, the larger diameter, the more current can flow through them, the MSD 8.5's will be more than sifficient for anything you will do that car, I have a camaro that puts down 698RWHP using those wires. I would to NGKTR55 Plugs, MSD 8.5 Wires, MSD Blaster Coil, and MSD 6A Box (MSD 6AL if you have a 6speed and want the additional rev-limiter) I would also invest in 1.6 roller rockers. And the 305 is a nice cam for mild mods. If you plan on drag dracing, than get CompEng 3-Way Adj. Shocks. about $100 for the pair, Also if you do not life in 20 deg weather, get the Jet 160 degree Thermostat. I can go on forever on small mods. but good luck!

Hey thanks man! So the stock 7mm size will be fine? Will see any gains upgrading to a msd box and coil after cam? What if I decided on spraying a wet 100 shot on top of everything else? Trying to gain as much knowledge right now as possible. And I don't plan on doing a whole bunch of drag racing but a lot of spirited runs on the back roads. I also have a auto. Oh how I wish I had a m6.......

Well the wires are worth it as they are only $70, kinda a pain to put in though, they are better primarly because they are better insulated. But if you are going to spray nitrous, than MSD6A is very worth it. Check this out, with a raven muffler, ET Street's, 1.6rrs, MSD 6A, Wires, and Coil, and a 150 i ran 11.92 @ 115.95, Also if you do spray, MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE BOSH PLATINUM ANYTHING PLUGS!!! Get NGK TR55's for a 100 shot. But yes a 6A box is very worth it, its about $150, and the coil is about $50. If you want to see my car run go to http://www.decentrik.com, click on "Cars", and then the Red one (one on left) That is about my car, to see the videos, click on "Videos", the first 3 are mine.

First off, the size of the wires is a huge consideration on our cars if you're planning to route them in the stock locations. The MSD's are a PITA. I prefer the Accel Extreme 9000's for their fit and heat resistance. Second, the Crane Fireball is perfectly fine ignition system.

However, unless you need specific features (rev limiter, stage limit, timing retard, boost retard, etc) I'd say skip an ignition system. If well maintained, the stock one will work great. Many people put an aftermarket system on and claim a huge difference, but in a lot of cases it's just masking a problem they had with the stock one. YMMV...

So there if I was going the route he is msd 7mm good would be good enough right? I don't want to struggle to get the 8.5mm wires to fit if not need be.
