You need an OBD-I scanner with a compatible cable/plug that fits the OBD-II shaped connector under the dash.

I use TTS/Datamaster with my pc and also have an AutoXray scanner.

Which one works the best and where did you get the 16 pin cable from? Is either one worth it?

You can get a cable from Andrew at AKM cables (do a search to find the website) ~$65. Download Freescan (for free obviously) and you are ready to go.

If you have a pc or laptop to use, that is the best way to go. Lots more capability with pc software than with most hand held scanners.

Just for codes and engine readout without logging, a hand held scanner is very useful. Which method of scanning is better for your situation, you will have to decide.

I have EZ-SCAN 6000 came with cables for OBD1, OBDII and other vehicles cables. Supports the new CAN protocol and came with Software that is upgradable for free over the internet. It has a sturdy carryng case.. Very expensive unit but I plan to buy a couple of new cars and keep my 95 so I wanted just one unit to service them all.

My scanner records logs that I can then transfer directly to my PCM or you can either brouse the stored data in the scanner itself or monitor it live on its configurable 8 line display. Its a handheld unit so if you want one installed in your car you probably want the get the scanmaster instead.

Its made by AutoXray. http://autoxray.com/products.aspx
