what kind of headers?

i think im gonna go with the edelbrock headers because i live in cali and they're supposed to still pass emissions i guess. has anyone heard bad about them. another thing, is it a major hassle to put headers on? if its not that bad then i would like to just go with some hooker lts and just chage em out come time for smog. any suggestions?

YES, more than major, especially if you never did them before. Its not hard. just time consuming and fustrating at times. Give yourself a whole long weekend to do it. Start friday evening, finish Sunday morning. Take monday off of work so you can A.) drink lots of beer and B.) give all your cuts, scrapes, and bruises time to heal. and C.) let your blood pressure return to norma

After installing them the mere thought of taking them out again gives me cold sweats, headaches, and occasionally convulsions!

Seriously, there not that bad. A lot of people from here did them thereselves and saved a ton of money! Use one of the install guides, and try to take your time and not get fustrated.

Honestly, you only want to do headers once. The install is a PITA and you don,t want to have to do that every 2 years, I would shoot myself if I had to do that.
Get the emissions friendly ones and put them in yourself, it will suck, you will curse, and you will bleed, but in the end you will enjoy them immensely and as long as you don,t have to change them out every 2 years it will be all good.

Some friendly advice. Start on the driver's side first because:

1. It's easier to do and it will give you some sense of accomplishment before you start on the passenger side.

2. Once the driver's side exhaust manifold is off, there's no backing out of the header install when you get frustrated with the passenger side.

id say go for the long tubes if its only every 2 years you gotta swap em fro smog, its not so bad. it is a b**ch to do, but the sound and performance of the long tubes over the shorties, cant be beat imo maybe you could check out as&m headers, slp, jet hot lt's, i would think theyre all better than the edelbrocks (from differing peoples results), and have hookups for emissions as well. dont know if theyd pass in cali though, thats something youd have to look into. hth

Why not just go with a set of really good flowing shorties like SLP single cats. I have heard if you call slp you can get the carb number for them and they are legal.

I also live in Ca. and just took off Edlebrock shorties and went with AS&M Headers. There more like a mid length with all the smog hookups, Though there is no CARB # a lot have guys have passed with them in Ca. Theres no comparison between these and the Edlebrocks, The AS&M are easier to install and easier to change plugs after there in Plus 1-3/4" primaries.

Yeah i live in cali also and i'm going with the as&m's. They will pass the emissions but not the visual check. But a lot of places wont even go into it that much as long as you pass emissions. Rcf925 how do you like them compared to the edelbrocks, sound a performance wise?

I'm using a set of pacesetter shorties which are illegal in Ca. but I haven't had a problem getting smogged the past 2 times I've gotten tested. The trick is to get the eo# for the edelbrocks and give it to the smog guys while they are testing. Tell em you lost the little sticker. As long as the oxygen sensors still hook up you shouldn't have a problem.
