Exclamation What is this hose that the altenator wore through? Hi pressure air escaping

Just got my car back from a very quick jaunt. Got out and thought I had a punctured front tire.

But, I could hear it on both sides. popped the hood and immediately isolated a hose with a very very small wear wore that the spinning disk of the altenator started to cut a small hole into it. (it was barely touching it) Theres no smell to the air and it was under high pressure. No coolant was coming out.

I've placed some rtv sealant on it for now and will wrap it with duct tape as a temporary fix.

I noticed a rubber type tie wrap hanging off the pipe which looks to lead to what I think is ther AC cylinder/resevouir. It looks like this is suppose to also go around this pinholed hose which makes its way to the firewall on the passenger side.

What is this hose? A heater hose?

Probably your A/C lines. Duct tape won't fix it!

This is not a hard line like most AC tubes. this is like a heater hose. I was thinking it was AC but why was it hissing air out? The car was off and I wouldn't think the lines would retain pressure.

In fact, I haven't had the AC on in I can't remember.

If it isn't coolant [or power steering fluid] it's AC.. that's really all there is there..

mY SUGGESTION IS YOU TAKE YOUR CAR BACK TO THE DEALER AND GET A yugo.
People who drive performance cars and don't know how they work and/or work on them should not drive them...
IT IS THE AC that you have a hole in it and if you ever looked under the hood and checked your oil, water, etc you would have noticed and fixed it before it became a problem.
You know where the dipstick is??

It isn't air, it is refrigerant, and you now have no air conditioning.
Refrigerant has no odor.

yeah last night I tried the AC and it wasn't working so I guess thats it. I know zippo about ac. Should be much easier to charge than old refridgerant.

And to whoever made the fuqin menahunie account, every fuqin mod on my car I've done myself so go **** up a tree. This was never a problem before, the hole is *very* small and just happened. I had a question and it got answered, we don't need your almightly sarcasm on this board. I've seen lamer questions asked and people just answered them to help out.

People

But to those that have intelligence and consideration to answer my question without being a moron, thanks.

EDIT: menahunie why not use your actual account instead of hiding behind a fake one? Your reply rivals that of what I've seen on import pages.

It's a learning process--your post is uncalled for.

Thanks BastardCat

Where this is a very very smal hole, I was thinking a rubber patch kit over the rtv sealant would suffice to hold it strong...

This tube loops up from the bottom of the engine bay, and passes in between the AC resevouir and altenator.

I know I eventually have to get a new hose, but for the short term....

Just patching up the hole won't give you your AC back unfortunately. The system has now been open to outside atmosphere so you might as well buy a new hose and have the system checked and recharged when you have the time and money.

This coming from a guys first post? Nice way to start your life on this board. Completely unnecessary.

lbrowne: I wouldn't use a patch kit to fix it. I'd just replace the whole hose, maybe with a little extra length to route it away from the alternator.

Somebody's pulling your leg with that post. I would not give it a second thought or further response.

I know I have to recharge the system, but this hole is so small thats why I was thinking of just patching it for now.

You help has been appreciated though!

Just patching an A/C line won't do. Even if you patched it and had it recharged, the refridgerent is too pressurized. I wouldn't take a chance. Even though it's not R-12, R-134a is still expensive stuff, and I wouldn't chance it. Just my .02
