What the heck is this?

On my 95 TA in the engine compartment there is a black electric pump or motor or something on the drivers side towards the front corner of the car, it has a small breather hose off of it. I started the car today and heard this thing whirring like an electric motor, what is it? Is it for emissions or something? I can get a pic if necessary.

That's the Air pump. It's for emissions.

Thanks, that was what I figured, but the location confused me. My car is supercharged and now I see they relocated the pump because the supercharger is where the air pump would normally be. Picture is excellent as well!

Re: What the heck is this?

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!

I just read this post in passing and I think you guys accidentally solved a problem I have been having. I have this whirring or wining noise in the front left side of the motor and I have not been able to figure out where it is coming from. Now I think it might be the AIR pump. I am glad I read this post! Hopefully a stethoscope will prove it tonight.

Re: What the heck is this?

It reduces emissions and helps the motors warm up quicker by injecting air into the exhaust. (Don't ask how)..
