What is a good head porting book?
Check Amazon for David Vizard's How to Build and Modify Chevy Cylinder Heads. It's all in there. The guy is a real pro.
Published by HP books. Only problem is it's about 12 years old, but the principles should still apply, and he's very scientific in the way he goes about things--he doesn't subscribe to myths like "gasket matching" to the point of hogging out the intake ports. Rather, he says, (and to paraphrase), it's more important to determine that anything we do has worthwhile results.
You might also email nighttrain66@msn.com--Lloyd Elliot. Very helpful and nice guy. Also ports heads for a reasonable price.

ive check that book out and im gonna get john lingenfelter's book

i might still try and port this extra set i have, but im wondering how much it would cost to get them flowed?

I'll second David Vizzards book I have read it about 10 times from cover to cover...lol. Anyway I just ported a set of SBC 041s using his book as a guide and I got those outdated cast iron heads. to flow over 200 cfm from 250 to 550 lift peaking at 246 cfm. The exhaust I am still working on, anyway these hease flowed 197cfm @ 550lift before I started!!! He really knows his SBC heads. I forgot to add that I didnt do any welding on the heads either...he he
