What else could it be....losing coolant :(

Well, I'm not ready to say that its head gaskets yet, although that would not surprise me. Here is the situation. About two weeks ago I developed massive coolant leaks that have been traced back to a faulty radiator cap. First my lower coolant hose went, then upper, then radiator cracked. So obviously it was too much pressure in the system. All main hoses have been replaced and radiator is fixed. I have bypassed the heater core and oil cooler, as well as the Throttle Body. In the time period of the major leaks. It was never run dry and the temps NEVER went up (per the gauge). The car has 163,000 miles on it and until recently, purred like a kitten and ran so smooth that you could barely feel it. It seems to be running a little rougher. It has almost a crunchy sound to it at idle. I have noticed absolutely no power loss. No white smoke and no coolant smell. I don't drive the car often, maybe 3 times a week for like an hour total. But it seems that everytime I go to drive it I have to fill it up with about a quart and a half of water. I would leave it to air being flushed out of the system. But since the idle seems a little rough, I think it may be gaskets. The car leaves absolutely no water or fluids on the ground. What do you all think? Thanks

Have you checked your oil to see if it is milky in color? Water might be leaking in there.

For some odd reason I have not. But, if it was compressing enough to blow past my rings. Then I would think that it would be blowing out of the tail pipes. I will give that a try tomorrow. Thanks

I Had the same problem with my z...I ended up finding that my battery lost a bit if acid, which sat on top of the aluminum rad overflow line that runs along the bottom of the battery tray, the acid ate through that line, and it leaked out from there..i never noticed a drip of coolant because it all sat in the plastics under the car until i drove....check and see if that might be your problem..

Wow, thats an interesting idea, I'll have to check that out. My over flow is generally empty as well, but I assumed that it was from sucking it back into the radiator when it cools down... Thanks for the idea

I had a problem with a coolant leak and like you I never had a drip or puddle under the car yet somehow I was losing coolant?! I went and borrowed a coolant pressure tester from Autozone (requires a deposit) I pressurized the system to about 20lbs. and about 30-45 minutes later a drip began then a small puddle formed. I had a slight leak at the hose connection on the waterpump, it was leaking out past the clamp. From there it ran down the waterpump housing and then onto the block to the K-member and I guess dripped off while driving.

Anyway I installed a band clamp on that hose, problem solved.

Good Luck.

Its just as much a resevoir as an overflow. When the mixture expands it "overflows" to the resevoir. When it cools, its gotta siphone back whatever went out. Don't think this is related to you, but i just checkedm ine the other day and it was out of the little plastic notch and sandwiched between the bottom of the batter and the plastic holder on top of the resevoir...

So if the overflow has a crack in it, it could cause the radiator to empty ?

Slowly if it's not restoring the coolant back into the system....
