what does open loop & closed loop mean?

what does open loop & closed loop mean?

This is prolly a stupid ? I heard it a hundred times, but still dont know what it means. I think it has something to do with the o2s.

Two different stages of the computer systems on our cars.

To put it in the most basic terms..

Open loop is used at initial start up until the engine warms up. In open loop, the ECM cant learn, but only uses what it has learned in the past.

Closed loop brings all the engines sensors into play and adjusts to current driving conditions.
