What does it mean to float a valve?

My dad told me not to rev my engine because I will float a valve. What is this he is telling me?

Floating a Valve--Usually occurs at higher RPM's when the spring doesn't have enough pressure to bring the valve back up (to let the motor fire). So before the valve ever fully closes, it's being opened again by the rotation of the cam. I'm fairly sure that's the jist of it anyway.

Yes, and usually this is considered to be a very bad thing. Since floating valves, often hit pistons.

The valve doesn't seal hense you can't build combustion and your car looses power.

You both are right as it happens at higher RPM, not enough spring pressure and is bad for your engine..

Float is actually when the valve bounces off the seat when its closing...

Not enough Seat Pressure causes float...

Or higher pressure/triple rate springs

BTW: The LT1 doesn't come factory with a limiter does it?

6200 RPM is the factory rev limiter.

Nope, 5750 RPM is the factory rev-limiter on an LT1. At least on the M6. 6100 is LS1 I believe.

the LS1 limiter is 6250...
if you still have the stock cam theres no reason to rev past the limiter, providing you disable it, because peak power is made at 5,200 rpm. Spin it right to the limiter and be content with that...revving higher with a stock cam will only slow you down..
LT1 makes peak@5,200
LT4 makes peak@5,800

i have my limiter set at 6 grand on my stock cammed carbed LT4...

As far as how high it can be spun, there are guy that turn them 6,800, but no *****in way id spin a stock rotating assembly that high and hard

I think there is a misconception with how high the stock rev limiter is set to on an LT1. Unless the previous owner changed mine (Highly doubtful for an old lady) mine is for sure at 6200....or more

MY91Y84 is correct on the LS1 limiter is at 6250. The LT1's stock limiter is at 5750.

I even verified this info when I got my Harlan shift light, 5800 hit the limiter before the light, 5700 would hit the limiter basically on light up. I'm set at 5600 on my shift light.

I know that the stock tachometer is not completely accurate, so that must be the problem.
