What do you have to do to make a Flowmaster loud? Everyone who has it come in...
Details: I recently had an LS1-based 3" Flowmaster cat-back system (80-series) w/ a Flowtech cutout installed on my stock-internal '95 Z28 (wanted the option of being "reasonably" quiet or very loud whenever I wanted too). The car also has MAC mid-length headers with a Random Tech highflow cat...
My question is, why is the Flowmaster system so freakin' QUIET on a car that has headers + a highflow cat??? It honestly isn't any louder than a stock muffler! It is absolutely silent at idle and not much louder when giving it any gas. It's even noticeably quieter than the previous Hooker cat-back (which is known for being very quiet) that I used to have behind stock manifolds/cat. This has got to be the most weakest and restrictive sounding muffler I've ever heard on an LT1.
I wanted it a little quieter for daily-driving, but not nearly this quiet, LOL. I guess I'm just disappointed because I've heard many other LT1's (even LS1's) with Flowmaster mufflers that sound a lot louder than the one on my car does. I'm definitely ditching this cat now to wake this muffler up...My friend did the same thing on his '95 Trans Am and it helped considerably (and it still sounded very healthy)...
On a side note though, the car is incredibly LOUD with the cutout open.

Also, would bigger tips help any to amplify the sound? Right now it just has the standard Flowmaster tailpipes which aren't that big...

There is also a Flowmaster Force II system which uses a 30 series muffler for our LT1's and is a single outlet tailpipe (drivers side), but that is supposed to be much quieter than the 80 series go figure...

I have Flowmasters on my '94 Z and they're pretty damn loud. It's not a catback (pretty sure it's not) but still awesome sounding.

Well, on the 94Z we have, we put a set of LTs and a 80 series Flowmaster on it, and it sounds great. Removing the cat did not make that much of a difference on it. We did the Flowmaster and cat removal before we did the LT headers.
The way I see it, the only way to be louder is putting a cam in it. That or just the cut out. But the stock engine is not going to be that much louder w/o some internal mods, regardless of which muffler is used. All IMHO

I have Flowmaster on my 94 and it loud. But then what is loud to one might be quiet for another. Now my Mustang with Flowmaster is really loud.....
Re: What do you have to do to make a Flowmaster loud? Everyone who has it come in...
Wow, I can't believe how all of you are saying that your Flowmaster mufflers/cat-backs are actually too loud??? Mine is honestly hardly any louder than your typical stock muffler (only deeper). I just don't understand then why my cat-back system is so damn quiet?
I know a bigger cam than stock will give it some lope at idle, but that won't happen for a while...But when my friend ditched his cat for an offroad pipe on his stock internal '95, his Flowmaster muffler got a lot louder at any rpm...Hopefully this will work because the interior noise with the open cutout is horrible...Doesn't really bother me since I love loud exhaust, but it would no doubt annoy the living heck out of anyone who rides with me, LOL.
Thanks for the replies!

Funny that you think it is quiet. My car is mostly stock with just the flow, 80 series welded in. I love the sound... in fact everybody does. To bad it doesn't flow enough for my new engine buildup. I'm throwing a pair of dynomax ultra flow rounds on now.... Not bullets.
