what do i need to get to 400-425hp?

ok, so most of us bolt-on lt1 guys are now in the realm of 320-340 crank hp. with each passing year, the competition gets faster and faster. the new standard is over 400hp (camaro ss, and a new rumored 5.0 liter 400hp mustang on the way).

what are the options for a streetable, comfortable, emissions friendly daily driver with my bolt-ons to reach at or over 400hp? i'm not rich so $$ is always a concern

i don't need the fastest car on the street, but i don't want to be smoked by a new 400hp 5.0 mustang gt either.

thanks guys.

Nitrous is the biggest "bang for the buck", and the quickest, easiest way to do what you want. Emissions legal too, and relatively safe if used in moderation with the proper timing retard. Unless you start tearing into the engine this is about the only way to do it.

Then nitrous & cutting weight is about your only option.

before a bearing or rod bolt went im 320rw with bolt ons. You are going to need some mods for hp if you dont want to strip down the car.

LT headers, catback, small cam and 1.6rr's, pcm tune, cold air intake will get you there. You cant have 400hp with no budget.

Than theres the good ole saying "fast, reliable, cheap" you pick 2.

i have most of those mods already: mac mids, high flow cat, cat back, cold air, 1.6 rr with new springs. if i get a small cam do i also need head porting done? lets' say my budget is 1,000. can i get a cam installed and tuned to be at 400hp with my existing mods?

If you staying N/A and don't get good aftermarket heads you're wasting your time. Gunna cost more than $1K but also the most important single factor to making N/A power.

just buy either a le2 setup or an AI195 setup and you'll be good to go. You will want new roller rockers, you can find them on the forums used quite often.

That's 400hp at the crank, so is that what you are looking for? If so, you shouldn't be to far away. A not too big cam and some port work on your heads should get you there easily, with a complementing tune.

If you're looking for 400rwhp, then AI or elliot (as mentioned) would be able to help you there.

My set-up is in that 400-425 crank HP range. The cam was spec'd by Joe Overton to pass emissions. I never had to try and see if it passed as they stopped testing OBD1 cars a few years back in my area.
LE and AI both have emissions friendly cams that will make the HP your looking for. You would just have to tell them your needs and then follow whatever suggestions they give you to hit the goals you've set. This does take some money though and I highly doubt you could do this without some decent portwork to your heads.
