Short Block: An engine WITHOUT the heads.
Long Block: An engine WITH the heads.

Re: what is the difference between a short block and a long block?

More specifically, a shortblock assembly is the block, crankshaft, connecting rods, etc. that make up the "bottom end" of the engine. Longblock is basically a shortblock, with an intake, heads, etc. that make up the "upper end" of the engine. Obviously, a shortblock engine isn't complete, and therefore could not create power. So, to answer your question, I'd say you'd wanna be looking for a longblock, unless you plan to transplant your stock heads on a new shortblock...
