What damage can a collapsed lifter do??

Does anyone know what what would eventually happen if you continually drive with a collapsed lifter?

The question is why is the lifter collapsing? When it dosen't get oil is when a lifter collaps........it may collaps when you start your car but it should eventatully get oil.

Re: What damage can a collapsed lifter do??

I colapsed a stock lifter and killed my last motor.

I was at the track about an hour from home and had no choice but to drive it home. It started with a loose rocker (really a collapsed or failing lifter). I replaced the rockers that got destroyed by the lateral movement and the car was fine. A hundred miles later two lifters completely failed.

Two lifters ended up getting mushroomed inside their bores. The then stuck lifters wiped two lobes off of the cam. So a loose rocker/failing lifter destroyed: Two rockers, Two pushrods, Two lifters and One Cam

As a result of all the metal, every rod bearing was scorached by oil starvation (I assume the metal shavings clogged an oil passage).

My failed lifters ended in a new motor. That is pretty much the worst possible outcome of a failed lifter, and obviously not the standard.

Tip of the day: Fix broken lifters

Re: What damage can a collapsed lifter do??

Im glad somebody posted this. I think i've diagnosed my "click click" noise as a collapsed lifter. The Z is 10 years old and my mechanic listened to it and said it's probably a lifter although he yelled at me for the way I "adjusted" my rockers. I tightened the rockers a couple of weeks ago via the "shoot-from the hip" method and the noise is still there. He also verified what one of the above threads stated. I asked him why does the sound go away as the rpm's go up , and he said they will be really noisy at start up and idle cause the oil pressure is low, but as rpm's go up, they will pump up??????? Sound right to you guys?

Ive nailed the car a few times, cant really see any loss of performance so im just gonna drive it like it is till I get the Benjamins for a cam swap(lifters, rods, etc...). The dam thing thats holding me back is Ill need to replace the timing chain, Opti while im at it, so that in itself is another frigggin $500.

If you swap your cam there is no reason to change your opti unless the opti is bad. But if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I know I know........ But its 10 years old and I would feel dumb not replacing it while its out. Im still on the fence about it. Everyone says to replace the timing chain with a new LT4 style. Im open to suggestions. Thanks..
