Okay, class get out your number two pencils. Today we have a pop quiz on exhaust.

1. What is a "cutout?"
2. What is an "offroad" pipe?
3. What is a 'Y' pipe?

Bonus: Compare and contrast long, mid, and short tube headers.

Thanks.

Finally a test I can pass:

1. A cutout it a y shaped piece of metal with a flange that opens and closes, which is usually placed between the y-pipe and the cat. When the flange is closed, the exhaust travels through the cat(s), muffler, and tail pipes. When the flange is open, the exhaust dumps out of the y-pipe before the cat.

2. An off-road pipe is a y-pipe that has no catytic converter. Its just a straight pipe from the headers to the muffler.

3. A y-pipe is a pipe that attached to both headers (manifolds) then collects into one and flows into the cat.

Bonus: Headers: Well, longtubes are the best.

Part II

Essay:

Johnny has a stock 1994 Z28 Camaro. He wants to completely replace every thing that has to do with exhaust on his car. Johnny will race his car is from stoplight to stoplight against other cars in his town. Johnny wants his car to sound "bad ***." Johnny doesn’t have much money. Johnny doesn’t give a **** about emissions laws or laws of any kind. List every part that Johnny will need to purchase using brands and part numbers when possible.

thanks again!

Thanks for your reply! Wouldn’t using cutouts make the car very noisy? I mean, *really* noisy?

This Johnny thinks this kind of talking is annoying and many will agree so save yourself from that. That out of the way.

Jethot LTs, call Jet hot $499 shipped on group purchase

Custom Ypipe at local shop ~$150

Whatever catback you chose, hooker seems to be a favorite $299

Well, this is a subjective essay. many different people will recommend different parts/brands for your setup. It would probably be better to look around the LT1 tech section to find out what people think about different components. If I was doing this, which I'm in the process of, I would go for Hooker Long Tubes into an SLP off road y-pipe, into a DMH electric cutout(flip a switch from inside your car instead of crawling underneath to undo wingnuts to open and close cutout) then a 3in pipe to an 80 series Flowmaster.

Only if you consider running open headers noisy.

Upon searching the board, I found Jet Hot long tube headers and Hooker cat back systems seem to be the favored choices.
Now, to connect those two components together, from what I gather from this thread, I will need an offroad y-pipe, since I don't want to run a cat. Jonaddis84 suggested that I have my shop make one, but I don't know about that. Look Back suggested that I go with SLP, which seems to be a popular brand around here. From reading other threads, Jet Hot seem to make headers that are designed almost identically to their Hooker counterparts. If that is true, then I would imagine that if Hooker made an offroad y-pipe it would fit well with Jet Hot long tube headers, right? If not, than will the SLP offroad y-pipe fit right up? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

SLP will not fit. Hooker might.

Suggested a shop since it will fit the best, and most likely be the cheapest as long as you shop around

I'm with jonaddis here. It's better to get one made (its shouldn't be that hard) than to keep trying ones that don't fit.

Then it is agreed. I'll ask my shop about fabricating a 'y' pipe for me tomorrow when I go pick up my car. I hope they don't mind not installing a cat, that's why I didn't want to have them make one in the first place.

Thanks, guys!
