What could be wrong, 93 Z seems bogged down in OD at all speeds

Wether I am at 25, 30, 40, 50, 65, 70, 80 mph in overdrive, when I go WOT pedal to the floor, my car doens't seem like it goes like it should.

I will be cruising then press the gas all the way down suddenly, and the engine only spins up to about 2800-3000 rpm. Now if the car is in regular D, it runs fine. I can go WOT and it will redline and just fly. Then when I let off the gas I hear the usual popping and crackling through the Loudmouth which I assume is normal because of my exhaust setup. But in overdrive, I think I should be getting more performance out of my car. From a stop, right off the line, in OD the car acts normal, I can step on the gas and it performs very well, just not while moving.

FYI, the car is a 1993 Z28 with a TH700R4 (4L60) non-e.

I have made a few guesses as to what could be wrong.

1) governor in the transmission
2) throttle position sensor
3) kickdown cable

anything else?

Is it down shifting when you go WOT???? If not, thats the problem.. Or, when was the last time the fluid/filter been changed?? That could be it..

It doesnt appear to be downshifting. The fluid had all leaked out last month when one of the hoses going to the tranny cooler broke. I believe all of the fluid was pumped out of the tranny as I drove the car home without realizing the line broke. I repaired that, and refilled the ATF. The filter hasn't been changed since I believe last July when it was at the dealer.

How much ATF does the 700R4 hold? Does it take alot to refill the Torque Converter (stock unit) too if that emptied out?

Maybe I will take it in for a fluid flush and filter change.

I should make that more clear, the car does downshift when I put it down into D out of OD. But while in OD it does not downshift.

OK, I wasn't sure if it was normal to not pull very hard in OD.

Another question, does it hurt anything if I would shift down into normal drive while moving? And does it hurt the transmission if I drive around with it always in drive, other than eating more gas?

Downshifting on the go is bad for your tranny.

You could also have some play in your TV cable. Tighten it up 1/8-1/4".

Does your car still shift at 5750rpm? If not it could also be a bad TPS sensor.

Grip, it does shift at 5750 at WOT from a stop in OD.

Could my TV cable be too tight? I tightened it up awhile ago, is there a way to loosen it to re-adjust it?

Just to reinforce what you have said, the overdrive is for gas saving. If you planned to race or punch it then you should be in drive. It's probably not good to shift on the go. My 93 Z in drive when you let off the gas it will downshift and engine lag will slow it, which is different in OD it will cruise at the current speed. Basically, if you are highway driving or staying consistent with your speed you should be in overdrive but if your in a foul mood and want to show those mustang bitches how it is then id suggest confusing them by putting your car in neutral and let it roll back like you have a manual then throw it in drive and burn the bitches asses.

Ok, so let me get this straight...

It is normal to not have a ton of power when I step on it, cruising at around 60 mph in OD. It's just in my head that my car is slow from a roll on the freeway? Probably, since the LS1's were alot better on the top end than the LT1's, it makes sense

Punch it at 25mph in D and tell us what happens.

My car is slower in OD as well.

If you think your cable is too tight...

Push the button on the cable and have someone floor the gas pedal and release. Then release the button. Do this with the car off. This will zero it again.

OD is different, you like cruise longer when you're not on the gas. i dunno. but I always put it in drive if I'm going to race someone

What does your car do on the freeway, say 60 mph, and punch the gas all the way down? Our cars should act similar, 93 Z28's with 3.23 rear ends

Clubbin so I was right about the fluid, I remember that post about the car loosing fluid. My friends car acted the same way when it became low on fluid.

From a 60 freeway punch at wot my car usally picks uo fairly quick, since its at about the TQ stall speed. At lower speed I have to wait for it, not at all noticeable at low speed, but at wot I see the TC stall speed.
