what could this mean?

While trying to get the new package started today we were having some electrical problems. There was several periods of time where we were cranking the motor over for 15 or 20 seconds. I noticed that there was what appears to be smoke exiting from the oil filler cap. Anyone got any idea what this could mean? and if its normal. Appreciate any feedback.

Thanks
Steve

Some is normal as far as I know. A lot of smoke/vapor means you have excessive blowby. By new package, do you mean fresh motor? If so, the rings may not have seated 100% yet, or they were gapped/filed/installed wrong.

Yeah its a totally fresh motor with 0 running minutes on it. Given the reputation of the machine shop/engine builder that put it all together chances of it being done wrong are very low. So it would make sense that some unseated rings would allow some blowby. Only thing that tripped me out was that the engine wasnt actually running, we were getting no spark there for no ignition, but it still appeared to be smoke coming out of there. I suppose it could be fuel vapor since the injectors must have been pulsing...

If your not getting fire and putting fuel in you could damage that baby if you do it for to long. I would pull the injector fuse and work on it with out fuel until you fix your spark problem.
