what could cause backfiring only in 1st gear

This is definitely a strange problem. Under WOT, the car would start breaking up at around 5200 rpms, but only in first gear. I've heard it a couple times in second but it's consistent in 1st. I've replaced the plugs, opti, ignition module, coil, and pcm. None have made a difference. What could I be missing?

possibly has something to do with how much more the car pulls in 1st gear than any other gear. maybe a fuel pickup problem? maybe you just can't tell as much in other gears because it's not pulling as hard?

sorry if i'm way off guys. this is my first time actually trying to troubleshoot someone else's problem.

when you say it "breaks up", what exactly do you mean? does it tick or does it just stumble?

I guess you could say it starts missing or stumbling.

Re: what could cause backfiring only in 1st gear

there's got to be someone out there that can help this guy besides me.

Since it is obviously not an engine problem, i would narrow it down to a fuel or electrical problem. i would check your fuel pressure and get your system cleaned out. it couldn't hurt.

It could be possibly the wiring to the mass airflow sensor. i had the same problem. the wiring was going bad, and whenever it moved around it would short out and throw everything off.

I don't want to be captain obvious either, but do you have traction control? And if so, do you turn it off?

The only other possible solution i could come up with from experience is that your catalytic converter may be clogged up.

Re: what could cause backfiring only in 1st gear

my car SOMETIMES stumbles through 3rd gear at WOT but i rarely run hard all the way through 3rd gear so i dont really know how bad/often it is. i changed my plugs and ran a fuel system cleaner and it cleaned it up, but a couple of weeks later, i was at the track and it broke up again on my 5th run or so. i dont realy have much advice, especially since youve changed out basically you whole ignition, but you might try some seafoam(or more a more directed product) in the gas tank and through the intake.
