What converter?

I'm looking to go max effort boltons. How big of a stall can I go with? 3800? 4400? Bolt ons thus far are AZS&M Headers, Loudmouth Catback, Lingenfelter CAI, U/D pulley, weight reduction, weight reduction, weight reduction, 3.42 gear. I'm going to be adding 1.6rr's and possibly an intake manifold.

If you dont have a cam or aftermarket heads, I dont see a reason for going as high as 3800. Why are ya lookin for a converter that high as opposed to a 2800-3000 stall?

I have a Vig. 3700 stall and I love it. I have the cc306 with a 3.73 gear. It drives great. When taking off from a red light, I compare it to riding the clutch a litte.

You want the converter to flash to about 500 RPM's before your TQ peak. With a bolt-on car I would be looking at right around a 3000 stall, maybe as high as a 3500 if 3k is too tight for your tastes...

I was leaning towards a big stall because this isn't a street car. It's track only. I want to have some fun going after the fastest bolt on record this fall and then running a healthy shot of nitrous next spring.

Then I'm with speed demon, call up one of the converter manufacturers and talk to them about your setup. I went from 13.7's to 12.8's with just 3.73 gears and my 3000 stall Edge converter, so I'd recomend Edge

Bolt on LT1s love 3000-3200 stalls! Easy .5+ off your E/T assuming your tires can hook

I understand that, but to get the best ET possible, you want your converter to flash right before your TQ peak. With a 4000+ stall you're not going to be locked up soon enough to take advantage of your torque curve. Like everyone above mentioned, give one of the stall companies a call and have them dial you in, but chances are they will reccomend something in the 2800-3200 range. I have a Vig stall and really like it, but you can get a quality piece from them, Yank, Edge or a few others...

I have a ss3600 yank in my bolt-on LT1 and love it. Most people tell me it's too big for my setup, but most of those same people can't keep up so.......
I'd say right around 3400-3600 would be perfect.

I'm not saying a bigger stall won't work, I'm saying that if you have a stall that flashes higher than your torque peak you are leaving some performance on the table.

I understand exacly what your saying, and I'm not saying my car wouldn't run faster with a little less stall, who knows? But I also plan on putting a cam in my car someday and hate buying the same thing twice.

Any LT1 with a factory cam makes peak torque about 2,200rpms so I wouldn't go higher than 3k converter unless you put a bigger cam. I ran a Precision Industries 2800 and loved it back when I was running a Hotcam kit in my T/A but now I run a much bigger cam and it has a 4k converter. later Clint
