Mine pops because right now my car runs rich as a ****...you can smell the fuel inside the car sometimes. It sounds mean as hell, but it is a gas waster. I am saving for a decent computer tune at MTI. My car has the fuel system from the previous motor which was a 396 still in it so it is all goofy with the computer having the 396 tune and the 350 motor.

Ok... so on a stock car how would you "fix" the popping if you wanted to, or is it worth it or practical?

Re: What causes that popping sound in our exhaust?

Ok, here's the real reason why we have popping in our cars. The exhaust doesn't come out in a steady stream but rather in pulses as each exhaust valve opens. Running a single exhausts like our cars creates an imbalance in the pulsing action which will create the popping no matter what exhaust you have. Running rich will make the problem worse, but running just right or too lean will not cure the pulsing. The only way for all of this to go away is with an equalizer pipe (H or X). Even if you run rich, you'll still get barely if any popping. Running true duals without an equalizer pipe will still cause popping as the imbalance in backpressure is still there. My friend's 79 camaro has true duals with H pipe and no matter how rich it got, it would never pop on decel and that's with no cats and 40 series flowmasters.

when mine had stock exhaust it would pop like crazy

Now that I have LT's no cat and a hooker catback it rarely pops. Only when the car is really really cold
