what is catback?

ok it seems that catback exhausts seem to relieve about 20 hp or something like that... what exactly does it do and is it street legal?

Yes, it is street legal and what it does is relieve some ot the back pressure in your exaust system. To a certian extent it will add to your hp and torque but after that you will still gain some hp but you will lose some torque.

A cat-back system is the exaust system that runs from your catalytic converters back (cat-back).

Aftermarket versions will help the hp and torque but really what it comes down to is this: power or sound and what sound do you like.

it does free up a little power, not much like a head/cam or some LT will.

IMO, the sound is one of the best reasons to get one. I have a Hooker Cat-back and it sounds 10x better than stock.

Catback isn't going to make a huge different its more for sound then anything it makes your car sound much more powerfull. Theres really no bad catback systems it all depends on personal preference IMO tho I would stay away from flowmaster products.

I personally dont mind the sound of flowmaster, but other people have claimed to dislike the raspyness of it.

There are also some people who say that it adds the least amount of power.

The 80 series muffler (I think) has also been known to be really crappy.

There was an extremely long topic called something like..dubunking the flowmaster rumor. I really don't remember what it was called, but it went on about one month ago and was 5-7 pages long.

ohh yea i red that artical a while back,

yea another friend of mine has the magnaflow on his ls1 and it truely added to the sound of his SS, altho nobodys f-body (ive heard) compares to my friends edlebrock Z28...

his 2 ls6's wipe him out but as for the f-body i havent heard any better, its just a perfect volume level so that its not too overpowering to the radio.
