What cam for my ported heads???

I've got a set of ported LT1 heads I'm going to install on my car, and was just curious what cam you all thought would make the best power with these. I honestly don't know a lot about how to select the right one, and any help would be appreciated. Right now, I have an SLP LT1 cam, which they have discontinued, and I don't know the specs, but I think it's comparable to the LT1 hot cam. Anyway, I'll also be installing 1.6 roller rockers.

About the heads, the valves are 2" intake and 1.57" exhaust, with Comp 977 dual springs. They flowed as follows

intake

.100 - 68.3
.200 - 134.5
.300 - 191.6
.400 - 237.8
.500 - 266.5
.550 - 269.8
.600 - 273.3

exhaust

.100 - 60.0
.200 - 115.6
.300 - 142.6
.400 - 170.3
.500 - 186.5
.550 - 193.4
.600 - 197.1

Thanks for any input

To go to a bigger cam, you'd have to go to a bigger spring. The bigger springs might need to have the heads machines to seat properly.

If you're looking, try a XE 230/236 or something simmilar.

You'd likely get better driveability and more power throughout the powerband with a custom grind instead of an off the shelf cam with those heads. I'd check with some shops like Bauer, or combo. It'll cost more, but IMO will be worth it since you'll get a cam designed to do what you want. I'm putting my $$ where my mouth is and going this route myself next month when my heads get done..

I agree. The only off the shelf cam I would buy next would be XE224/236 (because I am installing a blower). Other than that, i would ask lloyd Elliott about his new custom cams or talk to AI.

Thanks for the plug but a CUSTOM cast core (just like the OEM one) is $260 while a billet is $300.

The price is in the right parts that go along with the camshaft to make it work properly.

The 977's if they have the right installed height will take about any Hyd Roller cam you can come up with unless it has really crazy lift.

Alot of the camshaft choice is in the goals for your car and the rest of the car specs like tranny, gear, weight, stall, cubes, etc..

As far as custom cams go, they are making the big power compared to the off the shelf cams with ported LT1 heads. Checkout all the posts on this site.

I misread the first paragraph you wrote. I thought you were questioning the worth of custom cams, but obviously you werent

Thanks for all the input fellas. As far as the springs, the installed height is 1.925 - 1.930, whatever that means. My car is a heavy *** convertible with an a4. I have a 2400 stall in it, headers, off road pipe, and cat back. It's internally stock except for the cam right now. I probably wont go to the track more than once or twice a year, and hardly ever drive the car, but, I want it to be very streetable because that's mostly what it's going to be used for is cruising main on some nice weekends now and then, and maybe taking a road trip every month or two. Anyway, thanks for the help, and any other input, or ?s are appreciated.

I'd rather see those springs at 1.900-1.850(preffered)

That with some Comp R lifters and you can do about anything you want with the cam to a point.
