What cam for best track times with stock heads?
What cam for best track times with stock heads?
Sorry to beat this to death.
If you had all mods done besides heads, what cam would give you the best possible track times with 4.10 gears, M6, and stock heads. Oh yea, and 1.6 roller rockers and 11.3:1 compression ratio.
I ask again because I have not yet got a definite word on which cam I should get. Also, I am not sure if anyone could actually tell me what the "best" cam would be for the best possible track time.

Ok, fine. What is the best "off-the-shelf" cam for the best track times. I have the 847, but some people are saying that the 306 would actually get better times.
And this is cetirus paribus (all things being equal). This is considering that the car is fully built with a 12-bolt and drag slicks.
I've almost decided just to port the darn heads myself. I definitly can't pay 1000 bucks to get it done, and I don't think it would be worth it to get a custom grind cam for stock heads. Streetability would be absolutely gone, right?

Moral of the story is....keep the cam you've got, keep the engine you've got but make sure you get it running to its full potential. Get some track times and get your current setup optimized dont worry about cams untill then.

If you do go to swapping a cam into the thing, just make sure you don't get too crazy on the duration. Talk to a good cam guy.

I think you are fine as far as cam goes with a 847, I have the same 847 stock heads, stock bottom end and I hang right with my buddy's cc306/383 in the 1/8 mile, I actually have a little more mph but he has me by about 2 tenths. He also has a little bigger converter and 3.73's to my 3.23's. I think switching to a cc306 would be a waste and a step in the wrong direction. How about getting it on a dyno and getting the tune dead on?? From there I would look to suspension and maybe some more home porting of the TB and other little things. I too mod on a budget and have been pretty good so far, the little things will add up.
Re: What cam for best track times with stock heads?
I opted for a custom cam from Bret, for my stock heads, cam only try. I got as far as 12.29 @ 112mph with only bolt-on's. A cam should put me well into the 11's..
I would add all the bolt-on's to your car to meet your goals, with a cam.
The fastest cam only m6 was running the gm 847(ajtar-11.9 ), while the fastest A4 was running the crane 210/224(frank95z-11.4 @116mph), it is a small cam.
I might think about pulling the heads and have them flowed then a cam built to match, if you have the cash. You can hurt your power porting them yourself if you don't know what you are doing. JM2C
Now if it were me, i would just put in the gm847 since you have it and all. IF it seems to be off pace, then i might think about pulling the heads. I dont have alot of budjet to do it right. Toss the cam in and take her to the track.

Re: What cam for best track times with stock heads?
I thought there were guys with the 847 running 11.5 on stock heads. And an 11.4 with a 210/224?! What other mods does this guy have done?!
