Lightbulb What boots WON'T I cook???

Anyones headers ever cook the spark plug boot drivers side 3rd from the front (sorry, dont know the #) ???
I've done this 3 times so far..
Stock wires were a joke... melted right real nice
MSD lasted almost a year.. but changed them and the boot flaked away.
The ones on there now cost about 150, the garage i took it to put them on, made a "heat shield" and even part of the shield melted away..

I would like some help choosing my next wires!! I'm lookin at Moroso ultra 40 or accel 9000 as of right now. Either way, i think i'm gonna get a moroso ceramic boot sleeve for the one that melts.
Please tell me this has happened to someone else.....

Any sorta help would be great!
THanks , Grant

Re: What boots WON'T I cook???

Hi grant,

I would reccomend going w/ the Accel 900 + the black and silver colored wires. I used them on my 396 lt1 w/ the dynatech longtubes w/ no problems. I believe you're reffering to the #5 cylinder, where the plug boot is about 1/4" or so from the primary? if so i had tried a few things, i used the factory "heat sheild" which clipped onto the boot, w/ that it seemed to get hotter due to the metal shroud touching the primary, i've found that w/ my 900+ wires, it is fine just by itself, and to make sure the wire is not touching the primary and you'll be fine.

Goodluck,
Nick

I use over the valve cover wires and have had great luck. I have different headers though, but had the same problem. Also, if I were you I would not buy the accel wires. They were the worst wires I have ever used and I've used about everything. Nothing but trouble. The ceramic coating just cracks and the wires start arcing everywhere. Not just my experience, lots of friends have come to the same conclusion!

Ditto that.....3 years no burnt wires. I might add you have to take care to keep the sleeves off the headers.....close is OK and your good to go.

Stay far away from the Accel wires. They seem to not age well After 1 year I had 3 bad wires. I tried MSD and hopefully they'll last longer.

I can't think of which company makes the "header" spark plug, its shorter and will keep the boot away from the tube. Also i have heard good things about the above mentioned Firesleeve. Good Luck.

Re: What boots WON'T I cook???

I believe the header spark plugs are accel.. So far i've been warned too much to go with accel.. so now i'm leaning toward moroso..?
Any wire brands u guys are partial to??

My wires are fine, the boots are whats cookin... Moroso makes the ceramic boot sleeves which handle the same 1200 deg that the Taylor can handle.. I'll get whatever, as long as it works... so if enough people tell me the firesleeves work, i'll go with them.
Thanks, Grant

Taylor spiro-pro's, unless your running some crazy high HP motor, they are plenty. With the sleeves of course
